The Saints Row franchise is well known for its foolishness (remember the giant purple dildo in Saints Row: The Third?). Deep Silver decided it was time to make a standalone expansion with Saints Row: Gat out of Hell. What crazy things did they come up with this time?

Story

It all starts with the birthday party of Kinzie Kensington and the crew of the Saints planned a special birthday party with lots and lots of fun stuff to do. One of these activities is a Ouija board and you guessed it right, this game of summoning ghosts isn’t going to end well. They connect with a ghost and after answering some of the silly questions, the President gets sucked into a giant red warp hole. Johny Gat is furious and wants to get the boss back. After threatening the board to chop it up in small pieces, he and Kinzie are warped into Hell. It seems Satan has some plans with the President and it is your task to stop him. Be ready to meet some old ‘friends’ in the blazing depths of Hell.

Graphics

We had the chance to test this game on the Xbox One and Gat out of Hell has both its beauties and its negative points. The environment is overall well done and it looks stunning to discover while flying. On the other hand, a closer look on the rooftops of the buildings give you the feeling like you’re playing a game on a previous generation console. Your main character is quite detailed though and the special wings you have are stunning as well. Some of the animations are quite off though, and seem out-dated.

Sadly, one of the main flaws is the fact that there are only a few different character models as well as a low variety of different cars. This does not only create the impression you’re fighting the same enemies over and over again but also the feeling that some extra effort should have been put in spicing things up.

Sound

As you can expect from a setting like Hell, there are some rough and kinky tunes. This isn’t that bad though, since you’re slicing, dicing and shooting your way to your goal. The sound effects are really well done and make the fighting superb. Another great aspect is the voice acting. The small sentences your main character say are somewhat funny and will keep you smiling. These don’t feel repetitive though. The speech during cut scenes is greatly done as well.

As last remark and to give you a little heads up, expect a rather music-related part in the game.

Gameplay

The main goal of Saints Row: Gat out of Hell is to find your beloved President and kick Satan’s ass. You can choose between Johny Gat and Kinzie Kensington to be your partner in crime.

Now you’re set with your character to look for Hell’s master, the question rises: how will you do this? Well, you will need to get Satan’s attention and this is done by completing the main quest line and/or side events. To help you with your goal, you will get a special meter, namely to track “Satan’s Wrath”.

Saints Row Gat 1

It has to be said though, these side events are certain activities, like rampage or saving souls. These events return in the main quest as well, so the gameplay gets a bit repetitive. Satan didn’t have that much inspiration it seems. What is a great point is that the game is settled in a free world, so you can run around and do whatever you want, although the area is a bit small.

If you want to start shooting everything to smithereens, you will need some weapons! You have some guns at your disposal but you can buy several more at the ammo vending machine. If you want to have the seven weapons that symbolize the seven sins, you will have to complete some challenges, but they’re worth it. For example, the Armchair-A-Geddon is one that you will particularly like, since you can shoot enemies while you’re relaxing in the armchair.

Although Saints Row: Gat out of Hell contains a few cars (Satan wasn’t that creative here as well) but why use cars when you have your own set of beautiful wings? Yes, you have the ability to fly and thank God (or Satan on this matter) for that. There is a big remark though. Sometimes you fly against an environmental item and you “bounce” off and go into a totally different direction, which makes it kind of hard to keep on flying.

Saints Row Gat 3

Though the overall gameplay is alright, there are a few small negative points. First of all, the game has a few small bugs and quite some invisible walls. Another small remark is the angle of the camera. This is at times so annoying because you’re stuck somewhere and the camera is in the totally wrong direction and is stuck as well, which makes it even harder to get out. This also happens when you’re flying.  The last observation is that you can’t enter a lot of the buildings in the game, which makes it a bit dull since you can’t loaf around and have fun in a bar or other naughty places.

Conclusion

Though being a standalone expansion, Saints Row: Gat out of Hell gives you quite some gameplay and will keep you going for some hours (if you intend to get all the side-missions done). The graphics have its ups and downs but the music and sound effects make up for that. The gameplay is quite alright and will keep you occupied for a while. There are some flaws here and there but it doesn’t really ruin the fun of killing monsters in Hell.
