Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash DLC – Review
Back in September we encountered the girls from the Senran Kagura series once more, fighting again to prove which of the rivaling shinobi schools is the best. Nonetheless, the last time they weren’t throwing themselves in the midst of deadly games, where one would not come out unscathed, but they were actually diving into some summer fun by having an all-out battle royale with water guns. Even though winter is almost here and we long back for some hotter temperatures, we can at least get a bit hotter by watching the voluptuous girls once more thanks to the hefty amount of DLC that has been released for this spinoff Senran Kagura game. In this review we’ll be covering all eleven DLC packs.
First we’ll start off with some fun content that doesn’t change the overall tide of the gameplay. When purchasing the DLC, be it one pack, or plenty, you’ll get a lot of cosmetic unlocks, such as new weapons that fall in the same classes as those you currently own, but with a fun new skin to spice up the gameplay. Of course you’ll find plenty of costumes and what not in the packages as well, making sure you can dress up the girls in whatever way you fancy.
The card game portion of the game is also well taken care of with heaps of new cards added to the fray, making sure you have a lot of fun building new decks for your characters, be it your own character or your team members when playing offline. The cards however all feel a bit ‘overpowered’ compared to the ones you get for free without purchasing DLC. This creates some balancing problems when playing online, as we’re not sure if things get filtered when playing against those who have no premium cards, thus if you get pitted against ‘vanilla’ players, you might have a reasonable advantage.
Outside of the weekly DLC packs there are also extra character packs that include characters from Valkyrie Drive, Super Sonic, Ikki Tousen and Dead or Alive. While the first few look perfectly like their counterparts from the original titles, the ladies from the Dead or Alive series received the ‘Senran Kagura’ treatment, and are somewhat unrecognizable as they have been converted into true Peach Beach Splash characters. While for the latter; some traits from the original titles they starred in still remain, they miss a bit of their former selves. Nonetheless, we can understand the choice to modify them as such, as they would otherwise stand out in the game, making it an unorganized mess. That being said, the extra characters are fun, and add to an already fairly big cast of characters to choose from.
Conclusion
While some of the DLC packs are a bit on the expensive side, the DLC is worth the purchase if you’re an active online player, as you’ll get a lot of useful cards that power up your character a lot. Sadly, the latter creates a few balancing issues for those who don’t want to spend more money on this title than necessary. If you’re a single player kind of guy, it might be fun to check out the week packages for the cards you like, buy one week package and buy the character unlocks to give you new characters to mess around with, but still a few extra cards to power up your favorite female fighter(s).
