Supergirl: Season 3 (Blu-ray) – Series Review
We first got to know Melissa Benoist as Supergirl back in 2015. The popular series turned out to be a hit, especially among The Flash and Arrow viewers. Now, several years later, the series still continues, with a more evolved cast and ever-growing fanbase. They say third time’s the charm. We wonder if this third season of Supergirl will bring us a charming Kara Zor-El with her friends by her side or make a 180 degrees turn and slack.
Season 2 ended on both happy and sad notes. Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) defeated the Daxamites and Rhea (Teri Hatcher) died. Unfortunately, in order to defeat her enemies, she had to activate the Luthor’s device, forcing her to make a big sacrifice. Kara had to send Mon-El (Chris Wood) away from Earth so he wouldn’t get affected by the lead dispenser. Meanwhile, Kara’s sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) asked her girlfriend Maggie (Floriana Lima) to marry her and Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) returned to her position at CatCo. We were pushed to the end of our chairs when a flashback presented itself, showing the evacuation of another pod with a child right before Krypton was destroyed.
In the third season, we see a grieving Kara dealing with a life without Mon-El in it. She focuses on her vigilante side more than ever to deal with these emotions. We also meet our new main villain, Reign (Odette Annable). This enemy seems to be the toughest one Supergirl has to fight so far. We also like, without spoiling any content, how this villain is a very interesting character and how much depth was put in her. Besides Supergirl’s main opponent, there are also the usual separate cases in the episodes. One of these includes Psi (Yael Grobglas), a mind controller who induces fear to overpower her opponent. J’onn (David Harewood) gets a more elaborate storyline when he finds out his father is still alive, and we get to see a lot of Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) as well, who spends a lot of time quarreling with Morgan Edge (Adrian Pasdar).
While the content of this season is fantastic, the flow feels a bit too slow. Reign rises out of nowhere but we get a look behind Reign’s screen before Supergirl, making the viewer wait just a little too long. However, once the story takes on, you’ll be very much invested. As always, Supergirl remains a series that focuses on feminism a lot. Our main superhero is a woman, and so are our main villains again. We also get some surprising and not-so-surprising twists and even though the former is preferred, we didn’t mind the latter at all!
As usual, we have a crossover episode between Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow in the middle of the season. This still makes for a nice breather in between all the Supergirl drama going on in National City. This crossover is the fourth one already and starts in Supergirl. Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Iris West (Candice Patton) get married and everyone is coming down to Central City for the wedding. However, they get brutally interrupted by invaders of a parallel earth called Earth-X. In this universe, Dark Arrow is the Führer World War II was won by the Axis Powers. Even though the first of four episodes wasn’t that interesting or spectacular, it was enjoyable to see the characters of the various series fight together again. The scene in the church is definitely the highlight of the episode.
When looking at the acting performances, we can only be positive. Our main cast continues to portray some of our favorite characters. They still manage to show growth and immense involvement. We don’t get tired of watching them for a second and enjoy a strong team on our screen, projected by a bunch of actors just as strong. Hands down to our newcomers as well. They have such a great dynamic with the main cast, it seems as if they’ve been working together for years. Besides this, the quality of acting also resembles that of the main cast. Spoiler alert: you will absolutely love some of the new characters that are close to the old ones!
The Blu-ray edition of the third season of Supergirl comes with a reasonable amount of extras. As mentioned above, the crossover episodes are all included when purchasing the physical edition, which is great, as it doesn’t force you to watch all the series involved in the crossover. Other than that, there is a gag reel, deleted scenes, comic-con panel sequences, and other tidbits that revolve around this season. In terms of quantity, there’s enough to explore.
Conclusion
While some series might not benefit from a third season, Supergirl definitely does. Both the story and acting performances are still going strong and so far, nothing feels forced. Besides the slow start with Reign, it’s an almost spotless season. We’re very thrilled that they were able to pull off such a great season, with amazing new actors and surprising twists. We’re excited to see what Supergirl and co will have in store for us in the next season!
