There are tons of Thrillers available on an oversaturated market, and it’s quite hard to come up with something new. The Intruder with Dennis Quaid as the bad guy, sounded interesting on paper, and after watching the trailer(s) we were unsure what to expect. It’s a rather creepy scenario when you buy a house and the previous owner is still lingering around, unannounced, behind the scenes. It’s unsure what the motives are of such a person and how to get rid of him in the long run. We were curious to see how intrusive this intruder would be, and if the movie would knock our socks off.

It’s hard to explain the movie’s plot without completely spoiling what is going on. This movie revolves around Scott (Michael Ealy) and Annie (Meagan Good) moving from the city to the countryside to slowly settle down. They end up buying Charlie Peck’s (Dennis Quaid) house. Charlie is a peculiar character but seems harmless at first glance. Things become a bit weird when Charlie keeps popping up uninvited, treating the place like it’s still his house. He mentions that he’ll be moving to Florida soon, but so far, he keeps sticking around and meddles with the couple’s affairs. It doesn’t take too long before Scott starts hating the ‘friendly’ previous owner, but Annie sees no harm in the old man’s behavior.

The flow of this movie is quite horrendous, to be honest. It’ll take more than half the movie before things actually start happening and before the movie becomes a real Thriller. You’ll have to make do with lengthy introductions and a somewhat long mystery level when it comes to Charlie’s persona. The last quarter of the movie becomes really interesting and suspenseful, but the first hour is a fairly steep hurdle to overcome. It’s one of those movies that can be a turnoff for those seeking some excitement at the beginning of the film.

Acting performances in The Intruder are actually quite decent. You’ll have Dennis Quaid playing the psycho stalker in this movie, and even though we’re used to seeing him play the good guy, he does a formidable job playing the evil party. We also get to see performances by Michael Ealy and Meagan Good, who play a convincing couple. Ealy and Good might lack a bit of experience when it comes to Dennis Quaid but they stand their ground quite well. We recently saw Meagan in Shazam!, albeit only for a minor role at the end of the movie. We reckon we’ll see more of her in the future after landing such a role.

There are a few special features present on the DVD version of The Intruder. You’ll have a proper audio commentary, deleted and alternate scenes, a making-of featurette and a gag reel. The latter is a fun inclusion as serious movies often don’t show the bloopers. There is not that much to explore, and what’s present is quite basic, but it’s still fun to have something tangible when buying a physical edition of the movie.

Conclusion

The Intruder does have a few good elements, but the extremely long buildup eventually feels like a giant obstacle to overcome. If you’re in the mood to watch a Thriller with a fairly good ending, then this movie might still prove to be entertaining for one evening, but if you’re expecting to be entertained from start to finish, this movie will feel like a letdown.
