The Last of Us HBO – Is it worth it?
If you’ve ever read anything we’ve posted about The Last of Us on this site, you’ll know just how much we love the game. Many consider it to be one of the best console titles ever created, and it’s definitely got an unrivaled story along with exceptional gameplay.
When HBO announced that it was creating a live-action series based on the Naughty Dog offering, gamers were excited but anxious at the same time. It was going to be great seeing the game in a new light, but there was a worry that the showrunners would mess it up. Luckily, The Last of Us is exceptional.
Must-See Viewing for Gamers and New Viewers Alike
Whether you’ve played The Last of Us or not, you’re going to want to check out the new series on HBO from Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann. It not only stays true to the source material, but it also adds depth and richness that players may not have experienced. Going along for the ride instead of actively participating allows viewers to take in everything and get swept up in the whole experience.
The Last of Us begins with an extended episode with a runtime of 81 minutes. This allows the showrunners to set the scene well and establish the key characters early on. There is additional detail, including a few clues about the impending apocalypse dripped into the daily lives of Joel and his daughter, Sarah. It also shows the affectionate relationship the two have, which makes what’s to come once the world starts going to hell all the more harrowing. It also provides viewers with a good reason to get behind Joel and understand his motivation later in the series.
Pedro Pascal the Perfect Casting Choice
According to Forbes, Pedro Pascal was the ideal casting choice for Joel, and it’s hard to disagree. The 47-year-old plays Joel with intensity and heart, and his name alone will boost viewing figures for the series. Ever since his major breakthrough as Oberyn Martell on Game of Thrones in 2014, Pascal has been one of the most sought-after actors on television.
The GoT gig landed Pascal a main role in Narcos on Netflix, and he was the face of it for three seasons. Pascal’s fame shot up considerably in that time, thanks to all the related content based on the series. Games like Narcos: Rise of the Cartels and the Narcos slot game got the series in front of more people than ever. The latter is a top title at the safe casino PlayStar. It features Pascal’s likeness on the reels and stands out among other non-branded titles in a bustling list of games that includes other classics like Blood Suckers and Starburst.
Narcos went on to become one of Netflix’s biggest-ever hits, and Pascal’s fame could help boost the Last of Us in the same way. It wouldn’t be surprising to see games based on the series on different platforms in the future with Pascal fronting the franchise. Along with Pascal, many of the other casting choices were on point. Bella Ramsey is another member of the Game of Thrones alumni, and she is already proving to be an excellent Ellie.
According to TechRadar, The Last of Us is now HBO’s flagship series. This season will run for nine episodes, but it’s uncertain how many other seasons there will be. If the whole series lives up to the first few episodes, it will go down as one of the greatest ever.
