The post-apocalyptic games that have audiences on the edge of their seats
It seems strange to think that the most hotly anticipated games of 2018 are so dour in terms of themes and settings. It is hard to try and picture a world so sadly devoid of hope as the one created by Naughty Dog in the 2013 release The Last of Us, but the sequel to this gruesome post-apocalyptic adventure is considered to be the most anxiously awaited game on PS4 of 2018.

Published by Sony Computer Entertainment and released on the PS3 the game received almost unanimous critical acclaim. The game was set in a world that has been ravaged by a deadly fungus which mutated those it infected into violent monsters. The main protagonists were a man named Joel and a girl called Ellie. Ellie is immune to the infection and she travels across the desolate world with Joel in order to find a group of scientist that she hopes can reverse engineer a cure using her immunity.
It was a game with strong cinematics and deep melancholy that clearly struck a chord with audiences. The relationship between Joel and Ellie is compelling in itself with Joel tragically losing his daughter when the infection broke out. He soon forms an attachment to Ellie and becomes like a father figure to her. Everyone will be waiting to see how the pair work together in the sequel with both characters back for the second game.
Apocalyptic games are popular and there are many offerings for gamers to enjoy. Some are available to try for free when signing up as a new player at a number of online casinos via Oddschecker. Games such as the Zombies slot game allows players use their initial free spins to play for real cash prizes in a post-apocalyptic world.
Another hotly anticipated title set for a 2018 release is Days Gone, developed by SIE Bend Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game is again set in an open world post-apocalyptic environment and follows the story of a Deacon St John, a former bounty hunter and now drifter, who prefers a more dangerous life on the open road to the safety of wilderness encampments. The game sets Deacon against hordes of zombie-like creatures known as “Freakers” that are the result of a worldwide pandemic. The game is set two years after the pandemic hits and much like The Last of Us allows the player to use different methods to complete missions. You can go for a stealthy route or arm yourself with a whole arsenal of weapons and go for a more violent takedown.
These games are popular with audiences because they transport the player to somewhere that feels real, while also adding the science fiction element. Even though the games depict massive amounts of despair and hopelessness there is an enjoyment in playing them from the safety of our warm living rooms knowing that the world outside may not be perfect but it could always be a whole lot worse.
