After having dealt with Spider-Man 2099, Octavius continues his plans of creating something extraordinary with Peter’s body, and the life he was messing up due to his chaotic planning. Nonetheless,  as expected, the web is closing in on this villain in a hero’s body, with Cooper pretty much convinced who this new Peter Parker truly is, or at least who resides in his body. Now a new hazard appears on the horizon, namely Flash Thompson, who is currently controlling the Venom ‘parasite’. It seems the so-called superior Spider-Man will not settle down so easily after all.

The Superior Spider-Man #009 Banner

Again, there is a lot going on in the bundle to properly summarize all the events in this review. Mostly this issue revolves around Peter Parker’s new life, which is actually controller Dr. Octopus, or at least his body is being controlled by him after wiping Peter’s psyche from the face of this Earth. He is getting his doctorate, starting his own company, all while managing his private army in the name of Spider-Man and enjoying his newfound relationship in the meanwhile. Sadly, Flash Thompson, a.k.a. Venom shows up as a possible hindrance, and Octavius has a hard time remaining composed, which is kind of blowing his cover from time to time. This façade has already been punctured by Cooper, who now finds herself in the hands of one of the last criminals still standing.

Dan Slott and Christos Gage worked together for the story of the issues in this bundle, and they did so in perfect harmony. The complicated business with the two timelines is no longer relevant, even though the future Spider-Man still resides in the ‘present’. Nonetheless, it’s clear that the ending for the series is coming closer, and this omnibus serves a bit as an intermezzo of things to come.

Illustrations remain the same as in the last few bundles, where the characters have very rounded facial features, creating very likeable characters, while still aiming for a fairly realistic vibe in an unrealistic setting. The colors are rather bright at times, and with the introduction of Peter’s company, many sterile sceneries are introduced, which are a nice change of pace from the crowded city views.

Conclusion

After reading The Superior Spider-Man #009 it’s clear that the story is reaching a peak with Cooper closing in on Octavius, Spider-Man 2099 still stuck in the past and Venom also appearing in the vicinity of Dr. Octopus. Not only will Doc Ock have to find a way to keep his life on track, but he will also have to make sure he doesn’t blow his cover, as new events cause him to overreact in a way Peter would never do.
