Nearly five years ago we had our last outing with the Uncharted series in its spin-off adventure The Lost Legacy. We loved the girl-power-themed game, and we actually hoped to see a bit more Uncharted content after that point. Sadly, we knew that not that much mainstream content would be coming out, as we already stated in our review of Uncharted 4 that it would be Nathan Drake’s last adventure as the protagonist of the Uncharted series. Now, we get the Legacy of Thieves Collection for PlayStation 5, which sadly does not present us with a new adventure, but rather a highly polished version of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Those looking forward to some ‘new’ content, may be happy to know that the Uncharted movie is hitting theaters really soon. As this is a rerelease, we will only be diving into the relevance of this spruced-up collection. We suggest reading our original reviews by clicking on the games’ respective titles mentioned above.

As stated above, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection contains enhanced versions of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. We assumed this review would be wrapped up quite quickly, as we were already very familiar with the games, and the series as a whole. Nonetheless, we soon found ourselves enveloped by both games once again, and these titles have held up surprisingly well. The environments are still as fun as ever to explore, it’s still nice to crack certain puzzles, and the combat offers a nice change of pace. When playing these two games without any time in-between, you’ll notice that the spin-off is literally the same thing, albeit with a bit less action thrown in the mix. We even noticed some base character models being reused, which was mainly noticeable during climbing segments. That being said, these optimized versions run very well on the PS5, and we did love some of the enhanced textures. It has to be said that mainly the environments shine in these games, as some of the character models clearly show their PS4 roots.

While the overall gameplay has remained top-notch, we did find some of the controls a bit sluggish and some auto-aim mechanics often locked onto enemies behind walls, while there were other targets in the open. This went hand in hand with a lot of minor bugs, such as when we would get blocked in a corner by a friendly NPC, and even on some occasions, we would be stuck in the actual set pieces all while being able to see through them. The latter would force us to reload earlier checkpoints to be able to continue. Nonetheless, the main gameplay loop is still very entertaining, and we agree this series belongs on the PS5 as well. We hope more content is created for the Uncharted series, but we were slightly disappointed nothing special was added to this collection. It would have been amazing to have a small extra chapter thrown in the mix, or just a small standalone item, rather than just getting an enhanced port.

Conclusion

Is Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection a solid must-have for your PlayStation 5? Yes, it most certainly is, especially if you haven’t played these two Indiana Jones-esque adventures yet, or were planning to replay them anyway. Those who don’t own a PlayStation 5 (yet), will be happy to learn that this collection will also soon be released on PC. We loved revisiting the series, and we hope some new content gets made in the near future. The last two games of the Uncharted series hold up very well, but we would have perhaps loved a few more minor tweaks in terms of the games’ controls, as well as a bit more quality control, as we did encounter a lot of (minor) bugs. That being said, we thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the series.
