Warriors: Rise to Glory – Preview
Have you ever wanted to know how it feels to be a gladiator? Warriors: Rise to Glory allows you to experience the “rise to glory” as a gladiator. Make the choice between letting somebody live or killing them off with the typical thumbs up or thumbs down. Get the chance to choose between dying as a warrior or living as a coward when you lose a match. Warriors: Rise to Glory has been developed and published by Gavra Games. The game is still in early access and we already got a chance to test our warrior spirit.
There isn’t a story present in Warriors: Rise to glory and although it might have given the game a little bit more depth it isn’t really necessary. You are a warrior who wants to earn fame and glory by defeating every opponent in the arena. If you yourself do not succeed, then at least your son will take over for you.
The graphics aren’t spectacular but not bad either. There is only one background for the arena which isn’t highly detailed. As for the design of the warriors, they’re pretty much all the same except for a few details. These details are the things you can change yourself for example skin color, eye color, hair, and tattoos. Your opponents also have the same style so it’s possible that your opponent resembles you. Fights can get a tad graphic with blood spattering over the screen when a warrior gets killed.
Warriors: Rise to Glory is an action indie that’s still in Early Access. When you start the game for the first time you get the choice to play the tutorial. This tutorial explains the basics of combat but as a special feature, you don’t win the battle in the tutorial. When you finish the tutorial you get to make your character by choosing his features. You can also change his name and “title” and there are quite a few titles available immediately but more can be unlocked. After choosing your appearances, you get to divide your attribute points between strength, agility, attack, defense, endurance, and health. Each of these mostly speak for themselves. Strength and agility also unlock certain weapons, for example, an axe through strength and a bow through agility.
Each level you also get a skill point which you can use to achieve skills that give you handy bonuses. You can choose the skill that fits your play style best. When your character is done you can fight your first match. The style of the game is turn-based and the combat is 2D with 3D art. Each move you do cost you a turn and a bit of stamina. You can refill stamina by resting and if you have enough attribute points in health then it heals you a tiny bit as well. As you fight you can also rile up the audience. If they are excited enough then they might throw presents in the arena. These presents are mostly money, a healing potion or arrows.
In your first combat, the attack options are limited to melee. You can move closer to your opponent by the number of spaces that your agility lets you. When your opponent is in front of you, you choose between 3 melee attacks; Light, medium or heavy. Even though medium and heavy do more damage they also have more chance to miss. Heavy also uses the most stamina but amuses the audience the most. At level 2 you unlock the option to charge, excite and use ranged weapons. Charging opponents is quite powerful but it also has a high chance of missing. By using excite you can rile up the audience by doing a funny dance.
Using ranged weapons requires you, to logically have a ranged weapon and to have a certain amount of agility. When you want to use your ranged weapon you have to switch out your sword. This takes a turn unless you have the skill “sleight of hand”. If you don’t have the skill, it’s quite annoying to use your ranged weapon as your opponent can move closer when you switch. You can’t melee attack unless you switch back to your sword so if your opponent is in front of you he gets a free attack when you switch.
Once you finish your first combat you receive some money which you will receive every time you win a battle. This money is mostly used to buy armor and weapons in the shop. Which you then equip in your inventory. Some armor and weapons require you to be a certain level or have a certain amount of points in a specific attribute. After a few duels armor becomes a necessity as most opponents start to wear a few pieces themselves.
When you lose a battle you get to make your opponent an offer of money or accept your death. If you accept your death or your opponent didn’t accept your offer, you actually die. Which means that your character dies and his so-called son takes over. Your son inherited a part of your money that wasn’t taken away with taxes. Depending on how many people you killed, you might have also gotten a few soul points which are usable by your son. Although this concept isn’t particularly bad it gets quite annoying to keep making a new character every time you die.
When you win a certain amount of duels you have to compete in the tournament because for some reason duels aren’t available anymore when the tournament becomes available. It would be nice to have the choice if you want to train more before going to the tournament since there is no mercy in the tournament. Which means that if you lose it’s a guaranteed death and you have to start over with “your son”.
Besides the basic combat tutorial there isn’t a lot of tips or explanation present in Warriors: Rise to Glory. So you have to figure out what works the best for you by trial and error. It might be a nice idea for the developers to put some tips or advice somewhere in the game.
Conclusion
Warriors: Rise to Glory has an entertaining concept but can get quite repetitive after a while. Since it’s still in early access it’s quite possible that the developers will add more arenas and features, which would up the fun of the gameplay. For now, it’s an okay game with some references, jokes and a bit of a bloodbath.
