Young Sheldon: Season 3 (DVD) – Series Review
Even though we were somewhat disappointed with the quality of the second season of Young Sheldon, the series is still going strong with a dedicated fanbase. The third season has now been released on DVD for our entertainment, and of course, we couldn’t resist having a look at the qualities of this third season. We made the remark that the previous season was somewhat bland and didn’t have a lot of evolution in it. Luckily, the third season seems to shift into the next gear and try to fix this mistake. While not everything is perfect in Young Sheldon’s household, we did find the third season a step up again.
Season 3 brings us more of the same: we get to see how Sheldon (Iain Armitage) is growing up, and we also get to experience the entire family dynamics. This season will revolve around Sheldon’s future school career, his friendship with Dr. Sturgis (Wallace Shawn), and his overall quirkiness. Outside of that, we see more content revolving around the other family members, such as Missy (Raegan Revord) falling in love and picking up baseball as a sport. Georgie (Montana Jordan) also starts earning some money, which also causes him to look at life differently now that he has ‘made’ it. Meemaw (Annie Potts) is also struggling with her love life.
Even though the episodes hardly ever reach the 20-minutes mark, the flow and pacing of this season are better. It feels like a certain balance is found between content that solely revolves around Sheldon, and items that concern the other family members or side characters. There were never truly and dull or boring moments to be found throughout this season, but we noticed we started disliking Sheldon more and more. In this third season, he comes off as an entitled brat even more than he did in the previous two seasons. This is actually even a topic in one of the episodes, where Missy (Raegan Revord) states that Sheldon always gets what he wants, while she has to be content with the few things she gets. That being said, this season raises the bar again, and we hope to see it evolve further in this direction for the following seasons.
Acting performances have remained somewhat the same, but we have to be honest that the rest of the cast members are slowly starting to overshadow Iain Armitage’s character, Sheldon. We find that the other cast members are growing into their roles, while Sheldon is starting to come across more and more like the most unlikable character on the show. For example, Raegan Revord, who plays Missy, truly shines during a lot of moments, and she has become a lot more than the snarky (and somewhat annoying) twin sister. This is also true for many of the show’s characters. The newcomer on the block is Craig T. Nelson, who plays ‘Coach’ Dale Ballard, who is a key character this season.
The DVD version of the third season of Young Sheldon only comes with one small extra feature which revolves around the aesthetics of the 80s. In this feature, the creators explain that they aimed to replicate the feeling of the ’80s while avoiding making a mockery of the period. We see that there’s a focus on more subtle pieces of clothing, rather than the bombastic outfits we have come to know from iconic pop culture from that period.
Conclusion
Young Sheldon: Season 3 feels like a huge step up from the second season. We find the flow of the episodes to be better, but this season also has a bigger red thread running through it, which makes it that much more likable. The same cannot be said about Sheldon, as he is starting to come across as a very entitled and annoying brat, with his siblings actually suffering from the special privileges he is granted on a daily basis. That being said, the show is entertaining and it’s actually quite fun to see the other characters grow, as well as learn more about Sheldon’s siblings, parents, and friends.
