Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – Review
Modern Warfare is a well-known subseries in the Call of Duty franchise, and it was actually Modern Warfare that ushered in the new generation of Call of Duty games. Older CoD titles often revolved around the second World War, and while they were extremely good for their generation, players wanted something new, and Activision delivered. Now, the Modern Warfare series gets a new installment, albeit a reimagining of the original Modern Warfare, with some familiar characters, but also a whole load of new content.
Story
It’s quite rare to have a proper storyline in games such as this, especially since the last Black Ops release didn’t include a story. You are tasked to stop the shipment of a dangerous chemical gas in the middle of Urzikstan. Sadly your mission fails, and now the chemical agent can be anywhere. The story is simple and revolves around a terrorist organization. You’re pretty much the hero on the scene, playing with different characters, leading different teams. The plot moves in a fairly predictable fashion, but it’s decently crafted.
Graphics
Graphically this new and improved Modern Warfare looks impressive. The guns all look realistic and the environments are certainly well crafted as well. While some maps have textures that are basic compared to others, the game is great to look at. The characters move fluently and the cutscenes in the campaign are of exceptional quality. There are some dips in quality in the campaign mode in crowded areas, but even then the game looks good by all our modern standards.
Sound
Music is often a less important factor in games such as this as it’s rather important that weapons sound realistically, that footsteps of the enemy (team) can be heard and that there’s proper feedback of what is going on around you. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare nails the sound design of this latest installment quite well. You’ll get the feedback you desire, and the environmental noises that are caused by your opponents are well marked. The campaign is fully voiced in an outstanding way. Other than that, the sound design suffices for the game’s goals.
Gameplay
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the next installment of the Call of Duty franchise and it also a reimagining of the original Modern Warfare. The game is still a first-person shooter and offers very straightforward gameplay. This iteration is a bit more realistic than the last Black Ops game and offers more than enough content for you to explore. The game handles a bit different than BO4 due to the added realism. You can only take a few hits before you kick the bucket, and this is something you either love or hate. It does also bring a very typical problem to the table, which we’ll discuss below.
The game has many different modes to choose from, ranging from very typical online competitive modes to a proper co-op experience for those who’d rather play in a team-based format than fend for themselves. It’s also quite fun that this installment once again features a proper campaign, which will draw single-player fans to this game again. Black Ops 4 lacked a campaign mode, and it felt like the game was missing something.
With this iteration of the CoD franchise being somewhat more realistic than BO4, it gives rise to new problems, especially in combination with the maps that have many nooks and crannies. As you are only able to take a few hits from any type of weapon, you’ll come across many campers in this version of Modern Warfare. You’ll more than often run into a zone with a well-covered player, who is camping the entire match. Not only is it an issue that you get killed quickly by these players, without forcing them out of their preferred spot, but you are also often forced to run around, as many of the online players stay still for the duration of a match. This makes the online play a bit dull at times and we hope this will be addressed in the future. It’s not fun to be the only moving player in a match, simply to get gunned down a lot by those who simply lie in wait, doing nothing.
Modern Warfare finally does what many gamers have been requesting. This version of CoD allows for cross-platform play, allowing console users to play together with PC gamers. You have different settings you can adjust, like being matched against players with a keyboard and mouse, or those solely playing with a controller. This makes it so that servers aren’t empty and will increase the lifespan of the game.
Truth be told, and pardon our French, it’s quite retarded that when buying a game for 60-70 USD/EUR you can’t even play locally with a friend if he hasn’t got a PS+ subscription. This negates one of the key factors that make this game fun. There is no proper way of playing the game, as the second player will immediately be prompted to connect to the servers and is declined immediately when you log in with a guest player on your PlayStation 4.
Conclusion
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a decent reimagining of the Modern Warfare that pushed the franchise in a more modern package, as the series stepped away from WWII shooters thanks to the original MW. If you loved the arcade feel of Black Ops 4, you might not like the realistic approach of this one, especially when you are easily annoyed by campers. Other than that, if you lacked a proper campaign in the latest CoD iterations, this one will provide you with a couple of hours of single-player fun. The co-op modes are also fun, and the wave-based missions replace the zombie mode, albeit in a very simplistic fashion. If you adore the franchise, be it realistic or with an arcade approach, you can’t go wrong with this installment.
