The Superior Spider-Man #004 – Comic Book Review
Doc Ock is getting quite comfortable inside Peter Parker’s body, and in many ways he’s actually doing a better job when it comes to combining a normal life and the life of a superhero than Parker did. Nonetheless, for some reason Octavius seems to be on edge, especially when it comes to how he handles his opponents, with several beaten to a bloody pulp and one in the morgue. Some are suspecting that something is horribly wrong with their favorite wall-crawler or that the man behind the mask is actually someone else.
Octavius often reminisces about how he got bullied as a child and it seems this causes a certain amount of outbursts, especially when fighting his enemies. Not only does this sound an alarm bell for some of his closest friends, it also raises the awareness level of the Avengers themselves. While granting him a chance to redeem himself without an intervention first, the rest of his superhero friends can’t sit by idly when he loses his cool once more. While they suspect someone else is under the hood of his white eyed mask, proving it will become harder than expected. And it also raises the question if ‘’Peter’’ will come along nice and quiet.
In a way the pace of this bundle is both fast, yet slow enough to provide the readers with enough information. The conflict between Peter’s ghost and Octavius is quite slow moving, while the rage outbursts of Doc Ock tend to make sure there’s enough action, be it against Cardiac, the thief with his heart in the right place, or ‘his’ fellow Avengers. Dan Slott is slowly setting the stage for a bigger battle, one that might either erase Peter from existence or grant him the upper hand.
Illustrations are being handled by the same team for the three different issues bundled in this collection, making it feel like one big issue, rather than separate ones. The detail level is rather high and the rounded faces of the characters make everything rather appealing. Overall not much has changed compared to the previous issues, making sure the quality stays on par.
Conclusion
The Superior Spider-Man #004 slowly sets the foundation for the next big fight between Parker and Octavius and while we all know the series won’t end with the coming issue, this battle may slowly determine who will get the upper hand forever. That being said, with the Avengers on the lookout, things are about to get really interesting.
