Thor God of Thunder #004 – Comic Book Review
With the entire Thor threesome going on, the last battle that determines the survival or destruction of all gods is imminent. Gorr is finally going to activate the godbomb, which will wipe out divine beings in the entire universe, not only in the future where the three Thors currently are, but in all different time periods, as the bomb can travel through the fabric of time itself. Three Thors, two hammers and a lot of enslaved gods are the only things that are able to stand against Gorr’s wicked plan, but whether it will be enough is something only time can tell. Sadly, there is no more time left.
Trying to keep things rather spoiler-free, we’re only going to discuss the first two issues that are bundled in this fourth omnibus of the Thor God of Thunder series. Last time, the three different versions of Thor were diving into battle with Gorr headfirst, hoping they would be able to stop the God Slayer, or at least the bomb that would destroy all gods. As expected, things didn’t really go according to plan, and the three different, yet same heroes, were down in the dumps, battered and broken. Nonetheless, Thor (or the Thors, to be precise) are not ready to give up just yet. With Gorr at least damaged a bit, and our present day Thor wielding two Mjolnirs, he should at least be able to do some damage, or stop the bomb from exploding. Hammers in hands, enslaved gods backing them up, it’s finally time for a final stand.
Overall the flow is actually not as fast as you’d expect for a battle of this magnitude, as one and a half issues bundled in this collection will revolve around the battle itself, which already started last time. That being said, the first half of the bundle has plenty of action, while the rest is more laidback, allowing readers to come to their senses once again, at least, until the final page drops you with another ‘bomb’. In more than one way, it seems Jason Aaron likes to toy around with the emotions of his readers, in a good and exciting way that is.
Illustrations remain the same for the first two issues in this bundle (#010 & #011), where a rather bland color style is used to enhance the fairly aquarelle-like drawings. Lines are rather soft, while the colors flow in each other, making things look like paintings, rather than comic book illustrations. The last issue in this album (#012) has a lot heavier lines, and the ‘color’ black is a lot heavier than it is with the first part of this omnibus. Nonetheless, both styles come together quite nicely.
Conclusion
Thor God of Thunder #004 will put an end to the God Slayer arc, or at least to some part of it. While being treated to a lot of action, you’ll also get some time to relax and take a less serious side route in the second half of the issue. That being said, an epic battle awaits you in this album.
