Angry Birds Toons: Season 2, Volume 2 (DVD) – Series Review
Angry Birds has been around for quite some time now, be it as a game, a series or simply as merchandise. With the release of The Angry Birds Movie this year, it doesn’t really come as a surprise that season two, volume two of Angry Birds Toons hit the shelves. The franchise is still immensely popular, making us excited for what’s more to come, but for now we’ll just stick with the drawn version of Angry Birds in these short episodes of season two of Angry Birds Toons.
If we are completely honest, there is not so much to say about this season two when it comes to a storyline. The season consists out of thirteen episodes that all last about two and a half minutes. Topics are usually the Agry Birds trying to protect their eggs from the Pigs, random fights between Pigs and Angry Birds, or small stories revolving around just a few characters.
As each story lasts only a few minutes, there is no time to make it very elaborate. The main focus lies on the many witty things constantly happening, but there is also quite some action going on. How about a joust between a Pig and Sir Bomb of Hamelot, or some heavily bearded Pigs? If this doesn’t already sound weird enough, just wait until you watched the full season. All characters only make certain sounds, without actually speaking, which only adds to the fun. The only sad thing about the stories is that they are really short, and thus there is only just enough time to tell a funny tale, be it without much depth or side characters. Everything is quite straightforward, but given that it is probably aimed at a rather young audience, it shouldn’t be much of a bother, as there is not much needed for it to be enjoyable and fun to watch.
Given that the episodes are all rather funny to watch, it is a shame that there are only about thirteen episodes to enjoy. This means that you’ll have seen the whole season in about 34 minutes time. While it’s probably not meant to see in one go, this is still not very much, as each episode is over before you know it. Luckily there are some extras, which are also quite short, but nonetheless add a nice touch. You can, for example, see the day of a coffee mug at the Angry Birds office, or watch ‘The bird hour with Ted Robinson’. Also the ‘Test Piggies’ prove to be quite funny. Other than that there are the Angry Birds 2 game intro and the Super Angry Birds trailer to watch. The extras are nothing really special, but are worth checking out if you haven’t had enough after watching all of the episodes.
The Angry Birds are drawn in quite a simple way, but because of the beautiful colors and nice backgrounds, the whole looks very appealing. Everything runs very smoothly, and the many action bits are well animated. Next to that, also the music is quite upbeat and cheerful and instantly gets you into the right mood. It’s safe to say that the music is key in this season, as there isn’t much more than that to build up tension.
Conclusion
Angry Birds Toons Season 2 Volume 2 contains thirteen episodes that all tell quite a funny story, even though it is short and not very elaborate. We would have been happier if there were more episodes, since you’ll be finished with this one in well less than an hour, yet the witty extras do make up for that just a bit. Your kids will certainly love this new series of angry, yet adorable looking birds and yes, you will probably too.
