Call of Duty used to be all about classic warfare with World War II as its main theme. Nonetheless, the franchise decided it was time to change things and thus other subseries came to life, such as Modern Warfare, Black Ops, Ghosts and so on. We loved the idea of battling in a current-day scenario and the series found itself booming, especially in the multiplayer options of the game. One of the most popular subseries was, of course, Modern Warfare, and with the reimagining of the original Modern Warfare, it was only a matter of time before the second installment of the subseries would get some extra love as well. Now we find ourselves plowing through the 2009 campaign with remastered visuals, immersing ourselves in a fairly badass tale of terrorism.

First of all, we’re not going to write a complete review with different modes, as there is only the campaign to plow through. You’ll be able to go through this story mode in about five hours, depending on the difficulty you’re playing. The game also warns you about the ‘No Russian’ mission, which revolves around a terrorist group gunning down groups of innocent people on a Russian airport. You can now skip the missions if you find this to be too offensive, and you will not lose any possible achievements or trophies when doing so. We find the mission rather brutal, but actually playing through it highlights certain important key components of the story, which also adds to the immersion.

The story once again revolves around the American – Russian conflict and in this scenario, it actually comes to a full-out invasion of Russian troops on American soil, as the Russians believe America was behind the slaughter at the aforementioned airport. Overall you’ll play as several different characters, at least for part of the story. The campaign was not really altered compared to the 2009 release, which we can only be happy for, as the original story was already very good.

Seeing this campaign of Modern Warfare 2 is remastered, it means it’s not completely perfect. You’ll see some bad textures pop up from time to time, as well as some stiff animations when watching other characters. Other than these minor hiccups, the game looks amazing. Many textures have been updated, as well as lighting and other effects. The game looks and plays like a modern title, rather than the original release. That being said, the 2009 title was already great for its time, meaning they probably did not have that much work when it comes to the gameplay elements. The graphics, however, are a big difference compared to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.

Conclusion

If you love playing through the campaigns of the Call of Duty games, then the remastered version of the Modern Warfare 2 campaign will certainly be a fun experience. The game currently has no other real content than the story, which might disappoint some, but multiplayer enthusiasts have more than enough content with the previously released Modern Warfare and the now free Call of Duty: Warzone. Even though the price might be a bit steep for a short campaign, if you haven’t had the chance to play this storyline on the original release platforms, then this is certainly a great buy.
