Back in January we had our first encounter with the Crimibox team, who make murder mystery cases for you to solve at home. The formula exists out of you purchasing a box with files, props and some goodies, setting a scenario for you to crack, alone or with friends during the course of an evening. You will have the files at hand, the necessary props in the box, and you’ll be able to use the Crimibox app as a support, as well as the designated chatbot, which allows you to research items, question people and so on. We will try to keep this review as spoiler free as possible. If this is your first encounter with the Crimibox series, we advise you to read the first part by clicking here.

At the end of the first part we had ourselves a suspect for the murder of a young actor. With some extra research now, it seems you’ll need to explore other paths in order to crack the case. Nonetheless, this time the case throws you more into one direction, rather than all over the place, and this makes the flow of the case very pleasant. You’ll have logical conclusions and bit by bit you’ll come closer to the truth, or in this case the twist at the end of this second part. We were quite intrigued at how the case is progressing.

Again we find ourselves using different websites in order to find clues, to look up certain elements and get extra proof for alibis. It’s clear that some sponsors were added to the equation, but it never becomes bothersome, and it’s actually fun to look at real existing sites for this case, making it more realistic. This time you won’t be needing a printer, but many of the extra links are easier to view on a bigger monitor, rather than on your phone.

The chatbot has received some updates, and while not everything is as smooth as you’d like it to be, they updated the hint system, making it so you don’t have to go through every hint over and over again, if you get stuck at a later stage. From now on you’ll get a code after every hint, which you can enter when asking for a hint, making sure it starts off at that last hint you received earlier on.

Conclusion

Crimibox: Dossier Macdeath – Episode 2 does not hide that it’s the intermission of the entire case and it makes sure that you receive all the necessary information to tackle the second part of the case. You’ll notice this one is a bit more linear than the first part, but we loved  this approach as it’s a nice change of pace, making it a well constructed middle scenario. With the plot twist at the end, we can’t help but wait for the third and final part of the Macdeath case.
