Back in 2017, we were intrigued by Don’t Breathe. The movie received a positive score on our site when the Blu-ray version was released, but we thought the movie would be a standalone story. Now, however, film enthusiasts can watch Don’t Breathe 2, the direct sequel of the 2017 movie. We were wondering what more could be said and shown when it came to the unnamed Blind Man. We expected more of the same but ended up getting a slow-burn bland decoction that couldn’t live up to the quality set by the original. Even so, it did have a few memorable moments.

Don’t Breathe 2 plays out eight years after the events of the first movie. The unnamed Blind Man (Stephen Lang) lives a secluded life with a young girl he saved and raised after her house burnt down, and her parents perished in the fire. As she was too young to actually remember what happened, the Blind Man has told her he is her father and has raised her as his own. The young girl, Phoenix (Madelyn Grace), is slowly getting more and more curious about the outside world, and thus she constantly asks to go to the city, to explore. When she finally gets to the city, she gets noticed by a shady figure, who eventually follows her to the Blind Man’s house. He then employs his henchman to abduct the girl. Of course, the Blind Man, already having lost his actual daughter, is not going to let this happen that easily.

In terms of pacing and flow, we found this sequel to be very slow. Even with the many action scenes thrown in the mix, it feels as if the movie is still crawling towards its very predictable goal: the redemption of the Blind Man. Some scenes were properly crafted, while others just made the movie feel stupid, and simply didn’t make any sense. The story in this movie could be told in less than an hour, but there is so much useless filler content and dragged-out pointless scenes that it takes away from a concept that isn’t all too bad.

Acting performances are a bit of a mixed bag here. Stephen Lang still plays his role quite well, but we do find that his persona has been bogged down and that the story sometimes forces his character to make non-sensical choices. Madelyn Grace handles her role very well, especially considering her age. We hope to see more of her in the future. Most of the supporting cast members put down a very generic and bland performance, making it feel as if the casting director truly scraped the bottom of the barrel here.

Sadly, we only had a VOD version at our disposal, which means we weren’t able to check out any possible extras that would come with a physical copy. That being said, except for some additional information as to how some of the practical effects were pulled off, the movie is very self-explanatory. Some deleted scenes and a few commentaries could spice things up, but as a whole, this movie doesn’t need any special features.

Even though Don’t Breathe 2 had a few okay(ish) scenes in it, the entire movie just felt pointless. For us, this movie felt like an unrequired redemption story of a brutal murderer. While certain scenes did highlight the ‘good person’ that dwells within the Blind Man, the movie doesn’t reach the same level of quality as the first one. We doubt that those who loved the first movie will like this second entry in the series. Nonetheless, as a generic action flick with a fairly original protagonist, you could do far worse. This is one of those movies that is ideal to have on in the background when you’re doing some chores or things that don’t require your full attention.
