Kingston FURY Renegade G5 PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSD – Hardware Review
Even though we usually mainly focus on games, we do occasionally feature spiffy hardware that complements our gaming setups. We often feature cool peripherals, but sometimes we do tend to get impressive upgrades for our gaming rigs themselves. In comes Kingston, who offered us the opportunity to take a closer look at their Kingston FURY Renegade G5 PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. While we often keep these reviews a bit short and simple, we can already say from the get-go that we were really impressed by the drive’s performance.
Even though not everybody may care about the appearance of their SSD, the FURY Renegade G5 PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSD has a very clean design without too many bells and whistles. The brand and product name are clearly depicted on the component, and that’s pretty much it. The installation process is exactly the same as other M.2 drives, so you’ll be up and running within minutes. For our setup, the drive was immediately detected, but we needed to set things up by creating a new partition. For our test, we stuck to CrystalDiskMark, which had average reading speeds of 13636 MB/s and average writing speeds of 12866 MB/s. The performance is impressive across the board, and our games ran as smooth as butter (thanks to other components too, of course). Those concerned by overheating can always consider investing in a small heatsink, but we didn’t encounter actual overheating issues.
As we are still a gaming site first and foremost, we do find it important to mention that if you’re eyeing this impressive drive to use it in one of your next-gen consoles, we’ll have to disappoint you. Don’t get us wrong, this drive works in a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S, but it will work at the same speed as a Gen 4 SSD. This means your investment would be going to waste, and you’re still better off investing in a last-gen SSD. For this, we’d suggest a drive such as the FURY Renegade PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. If you still decide to pick this one up, to be somewhat futureproof or because you eventually want to use the drive in a PC, don’t forget to add a heatsink, otherwise it might overheat in your console.
Conclusion
If you’re looking to upgrade your gaming rig, we can easily suggest going for Kingston’s FURY Renegade G5 PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSD, because it’s a future-proof option with impressive performance. We were up and running in a matter of moments, and truth be told, that’s all a gamer could wish for. The only thing that might be holding potential buyers back is the actual price point, but we do find this a worthy investment for your gaming setup.
