Love, Simon is one of the many LGBT movies that have been popping up during the last few years. Unfortunately, most of them felt more like porn movies than something else. But nothing is less true if we look at this beautiful, caring, and we might even say, daring movie. They made sure that Love, Simon is very relatable for young gay people who struggle with their identity, don’t know how to come out and every obstacle they will need to face. We know there are still a lot of people against the LGBT community and if you are one of them, you already know this movie won’t be your thing.

Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) is a normal boy, living a normal life. His dad was the popular quarterback and his mom the most beautiful girl in school, they were the perfect love story. He has a sister who he actually likes, but that specific fact he won’t admit to her and two best friends, Leah (Katherine Langford) and Nick (Jorge Lendeborg), which he has known for the past thirteen years and recently he met his other best friend, Abby (Alexandra Shipp). But he has a secret, he is gay.

He never acted on his desires but when there was an anonymous text under the name of Blue on ‘Creeksecret’ about a boy who is also gay and struggles with the same issues as him, he decided to send him an email with a newly made email account, so also his identity could stay hidden.

Kind of desperately he waits for a reply back from Blue, which he got after a day. It does not take long for them to fall in love with each other, not even knowing how the other looks. After a while, Simon (Nick Robinson) becomes more careless and accidentally leaves his mailbox open on a school computer. The weird kid of the class, Martin (Logan Miller), which has a crush on one of his best friends, finds the emails and screenshots them. When he confronts Simon with it, he blackmails Simon into trying to make Abby fall in love with him.

This will mean that Simon needs to lie to his friends, break their trust and betray them in certain ways. All of this, so his secret won’t come out. Will Simon be able to keep his secret hidden, will he ever know who is behind the identity of the mysterious Blue and will his friends find out all the lies?

The movie starts out very slow, but after half an hour it starts to turn into a hurricane of troubles, lies and secrets. So prepare for a bumpy ride in terms of your feelings.  This movie will make you laugh, cry, hope and will put you for a moment in the shoes of someone who actually deals with this kind of stuff. The makers of the movie depicted Simon in a non-stereotypical way, which will make it a lot more accessible for teenage boys who go through the same phase, as he said, he is just a normal boy with a normal life.

If we look at the cast, we can see why the director put them together because they interact with each other perfectly. Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel are the perfect examples of the most popular couple of high school who grew old together. Katherine Langford is kind of genius in the way she can put a certain depth in her acting when she is a heartbroken teenager. And Nick Robinson as Simon is a match made in heaven, if he keeps this up we will certainly see a lot more of him.

The Blu-ray version of Love, Simon has a lot of extras available. It was not the most necessary thing to do, but it is fun to get to know the little quirks of the actors. With the theme of the movie, you should already expect that the movie makers feel the need to communicate about that ‘love is love’ and they didn’t forget about that either.

Conclusion

Love, Simon is a beautiful family drama which certainly turned on the waterworks with the sad turns this movie takes. The cast is carefully picked and bring a mind-blowing performance. A lot of people will not appreciate this movie yet because of the theme but if you have an open mind and are a sucker for romantic dramas this is certainly a movie for you.
