Samus Aran makes her triumphant return in Metroid Dread

Nintendo’s E3 Direct has come and gone, and perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was the reveal of a brand new entry in the Metroid series. Fans were hoping to get a glimpse at Metroid Prime 4, and although the reaffirmation came that that game was still in development, no further information was shared. To bide the fanbase over, however, Nintendo will soon launch Metroid Dread, which sees the series return to the classic 2D gameplay that began the franchise. As long-time Metroid fans know, the title of Metroid Dread carries some significance as this was the supposed title for the sequel to 2002’s Metroid Fusion. The fact that the title was kept for this upcoming game, therefore, raises expectations and questions as to how it fits into the wider Metroid universe.

The launch of Metroid Dread isn’t too far ahead, as it’s set to launch on the 8th of October, exclusively on the Switch. More details about the game are expected to be revealed soon, with the Nintendo Treehouse -which aired right after the presentation- sharing an exclusive first look at the new title. Alongside Metroid Dread, two new amiibo will also be released. Metroid Dread is the first new Metroid game releasing on the Switch.
