If there is something that the Winchester brothers taught us, it would definitely be that supernatural beings are all around us… and that pie is a necessity. In this fourteenth season, evil is not far away and the brothers don’t have any peace, yet again. Their life is on the line while trying to fight for whatever they hold dear. Let’s have a look at what happened, shall we?

If you didn’t watch season thirteen yet, you might get some spoilers in the upcoming section, so please be aware of this. After the last episode, the Winchester brothers have split yet again. Dean (Jensen Ackles) didn’t see any other option than to accept Michael, the evil archangel from the Apocalypse world, in his body and defeat Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) once and for all. Of course, after the victory, Michael took over Dean’s body and is now running around freely in this world, creating a new chance for him to purify Earth. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Castiel (Misha Collins) are trying everything they can, together with Mary (Samantha Smith) and Jack (Alexander Calvert), to get the lost family member and friend back home. Lucifer took Jack’s grace, leaving him in his human form. Without his powers, the burden of not being able to help weighs heavily on the young guy. That and some more bad luck looms just around the corner.

Sam, on the other hand, has his hands full with the hunters and refugees from the Apocalypse world, trying to keep them safe and coordinating everyone. With Michael going rampant, sooner or later the hunters are becoming the hunted and they need to do everything in their power to save the world yet again from the next evil mastermind. The end of the season will leave you dumbstruck and you can already know the last season of this thrilling series is going to be the ultimate adventure.

The pace is just right throughout the whole season. In the beginning, you can see the struggles they all have to go through with the loss of Dean and how they (try to) cope with it. Afterward, some plot twists will sometimes just pop up and leave you speechless. Don’t worry though, the usual humor is still present, alternated with some darker or more emotional moments. Next to the main plotline, there are also other side events when they take on cases. It feels like these moments are less present and that more time is put into the aftermath of the previous season.

Acting-wise, there isn’t too much to be said then that the chemistry between the regular crew is just so beautiful and authentic. Jensen and Jared really feel like they’re actual brothers, just by the way they look at each other and how their actions feel so genuine. Mischa and Samantha fit right in there too and even though Alexander hasn’t been around for long, he feels like an asset to the team. Everyone is so used to be around each other, and it shows on the screen. This also means that certain parts of the series will hit like a bomb thanks to the character development and the emotional connection they all share.

If having twenty episodes of action isn’t enough, you can also dive into the extras the DVD has to offer. Next to deleted scenes, you can also hear live commentary during certain episodes while there are also special features that contain some more background information. In need of some laughter after that last episode? Don’t forget to watch the gag reel then.

This season feels like a nice build-up for the next and final one. A lot of the events are still the aftermath of what happened in season thirteen, with a pinch of Winchester humor and a ton of emotion all drizzled over each episode. The hunting and case solving seems to be a bit pushed to the background, but it was needed to set the stage for the grand finale. Overall a really nice season to watch but do keep some tissues close by… just to be sure.
