The life of a teenager is never easy with stress from school, maintaining social contacts, relationships and much more. Mina Park is having quite a bad time, recently her best friend fell into a mysterious coma and ever since then she is suffering from dark dreams. Little does she know that her faith will soon be sealed, as she stumbles upon something that might be connected with her best friend. Explore the dark and dangerous world where the curse is nested, this while evading monsters and hiding for your life. The Coma 2 is a game that has been covered by our writers on all the different platforms. It seems that thanks to our positive reviews, the developers want us to try it out on each console. We already tested it on PC and PS4, today we look at how the port looks on the Xbox One.

Story

The game introduces us to our character, Mina Park, whos best friend Youngho fell into a mysterious coma a few weeks ago. Ever since then, Mina started suffering from weird dark dreams that haunt her every night. You attend Sehwa High School and it’s just another day in a teenager’s life. But tonight will be a special night, there will be a Blood Moon and this rare phenomenon only occurs once every few decades. You had to stay late and, as most students already went home, you suddenly stumble upon a classmate entering a locked room. Your curiosity takes the best of you and you follow him in. In this room, you find a shrine and a book. Here you read about how the fourth and final Blood Moon will open the Umbran gates and welcome the Vicious Sister into our world.

By reading this book you suddenly lose consciousness and you wake up into an alternative world, where everything is inhabited by strange monsters, tentacles and twisted beings. Your goal is to find a way out of this hell while helping out other unfortunate souls and Ghost Vigilantes. The story is very immersive, you can find notes that go deeper into the lore and when talking to characters you will be filled in with the things that are going on in this realm. It is in your best interest to follow the dialogues.

Graphics

The Coma 2 sports a 2D style. The graphics are beautiful, all the environments are very detailed with moving pictures in TVs and animations are simple but good. There are animated story scenes that show what is going on, mixed with in-game text dialogues. In the background there will be many things happening and spotting enemies in the environment can be pretty easy if you take it slowly, yet, if you don’t pay enough attention you will be surprised by them. For a horror game it surely is bloody, but not overly gory so it’s still open for many different fans of the genre.

Sound

The people who worked on the sound design of the game should get a pay raise. There are many scenes that are fully voiced in Korean (as the game takes place there). While maybe not interesting for us western gamers, it fits perfectly with the vibe that the game gives us. Next is the game’s sound engineering; high-quality sounds effects are used during gameplay and scenes. This will make the player fully immerse into the story and will make the whole experience feel very organic. Once you meet the possessed hunters in the other world, you will have to spot them by listening to the tapping of their high heels. But even when you are safe and in a conversation, you will hear the tapping on the floor, making you feel uncomfortable and unsafe. This in combination with the creepy music playing, will have you wanting to escape rather fast, without becoming boring in the long run.

Gameplay

The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters is a horror adventure game where you must explore locations, find certain items and dodge various enemies so you don’t end up ‘missing’. The game starts with a short and easily accessible tutorial. Moving around in the game is pretty easy and with the limited amount of controls needed, you will learn all that you need to know in just a few minutes.

It all begins as a normal day at school, you will have to explore and meet some characters while learning the mechanics along the way. Once the story progresses and you find yourself into the other world, the game will turn into a survival-styled game. In the first chapter, you will have to dodge some traps while exploring, but rather soon you will stumble upon crazed people who want to take your life. It seems that the Vicious Sister curse is manifesting in the hearts of the females who are in this place and the more they kill, the happier they are. You don’t really have anything to defend yourself with, only a lighter and bottles of mace. The biggest problem with the assailants is that once they spot you, they will chase you down and end your life. You must run and hide, but since they are lightning-fast, getting spotted mostly means the end of your run.

A rather annoying feature is the quick-time events that are in the game. Sometimes you will have to complete them to solve puzzles, flee from combat, or stay hidden in your hiding place. You will have to move slowly in the dark, while carefully listening to various audio cues to know the whereabouts of your enemy. The story is pretty linear, it basically goes from point A to point B. This isn’t a bad decision as exploring dangerous locations can prove to be really stressful.

As earlier mentioned, controlling the game is pretty easy. You just have your directional buttons, run and dodge button. You will have to keep a close eye on your health and stamina, as most hits will cause you to bleed and lose a lot of health. During your adventures, you will find various items to aid your exploration but sadly your inventory is very limited. This in combination with only manual saving can cause some frustration when you get stuck in certain more difficult parts.

Conclusion

As most of us are pretty positive about The Coma 2, it is evenly good on the consoles as on the PC. The gameplay is fun but can be frustrating as the enemies are relentless and will end your life rather quickly. You will explore many places in the Korean town, while uncovering hidden lore, solving puzzles and dodging many enemies. The graphics are amazing and the sounds are very immersing, after playing this game you surely will have some PTSD from the tapping of high heels.
