Young adults, passionate relationships and of course dramatic events lurking behind every corner makes for a great plot for a typical high school teen drama. Add vampires, werewolves, immortals, witches and a whole lot of dead bodies to the equation and you’ll end up with a series called The Vampire Diaries. The series has been running for five seasons now and with the wild events that are occurring, it seems the supernatural beings in Mystic Falls are still in for many adventures to come. Well, let the bodies hit the floor.

TVDS5

Be warned, those who haven’t watched the previous seasons might be in for some spoilers that could ruin the viewing experience for those who wish to pick up this series from the start.

The season pretty much starts off, where the fourth season ended (duh!), namely with the resurrection of Silas, the immortal, and the death of Bonnie and resurrection of Jeremy. Whilst this may already seem like an everyday experience for those living in Mystic Falls, it seems things are about to get that much more weird.

As is pretty obvious, Silas’ appearance is identical to that of Stefan and the fact that he’s a lot older than Stefan, makes it so that he’s the original owner of the Stefan-esque look. This adds another doppelganger plot to the equation of the already existing doppelganger relation of Katherine and Elena, which have gone through a lot of issues of their own. Especially, with Katherine being cured of the vampirism, thanks to Elena, she’s not really on good terms with her.

Original Sin

Season 5 starts off with the events that surround Silas, trying to cure himself of his immortality, to try and spend eternity with his long lost love in the afterlife, it seems an angry, yet powerful ex rather wants him to suffer for all eternity. (You say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to?) This powerful ex, which was presumed dead for a few thousand of years, seems to have been supported by a mysterious band of semi-witches called the travelers (or pretty much gypsies with some magical powers). These travelers have the ability to travel inside the body of someone else and thus they seem to be a force to be reckoned with. In the meanwhile Jeremy still has his sixth sense in overdrive, seeing he can still communicate with the deceased Bonnie, which makes him act as if she’s traveling around the world. Of course secrets like this are hard to keep and thus the companionship, of vampires, werewolves, humans and others, soon learn of her demise and start figuring out a plot to get her back from the world of the dead. Elaborating further on the coming events, would kind of ruin the start of the fifth season.

After the Silas saga, it seems that it’s Katherine’s turn to shine for a while, especially when a vampire traveler named Nadia tends to be out for Katherine. It seems they have a ‘familiar’ bond, that might surprise some.

The Cell

Overall, the doppelgangers get their fair share of attention in the fifth season, which makes it feel as if the entire doppelganger idea is finally getting explained properly as well as used and implemented in the series.

Other than that, you will notice that pretty much all characters get their time to shine, making them feel that much more important. Fans of the love drama, worry not! The relationship roulette is still very much present even in the fifth season of The Vampire Diaries, either juicing up the series or giving the impression that Mystic Falls is filled with horny teens that feel like giving everybody a go. That being said, the love perils add a lot of extra viewing pleasure to the series, that exactly makes The Vampire Diaries the fun, serious and at times witty series that it is.

Seeing the series has been running for several seasons, it makes a lot less room for actual character development as you will already know most of the characters and how they go about their everyday lives. That being said, you might see some surprising and unexpected acts coming from Katherine (Nina Dobrev), Matt (Zach Roerig) feels a tad more important this season and characters like Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Caroline (Candice Accola), Bonnie (Katerina Graham) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) will still act quite predictable as always. Other than that, you will see reappearing characters that were quite important in one or more of the previous seasons, which give a fun extra touch to the resident cast of the series.

No Exit

Like in the previous seasons, it has to be said that the creators of the series have a tendency to drop the right song at the right time to stress out certain moments in the series. That being said, be sure to keep a tissue or two closely, seeing a tearjerker might not be that far away.

Conclusion

While it is the fifth season of The Vampire Diaries, the series still proves to be quite surprising, whilst predictable at the same time. It’s fun to see episode that you might be able to predict, whilst some characters suddenly take a full 180 degree turn and surprise the hell out of you. Even though personally I’m not a fan of series that tend to be stretched out too much, I’m still very much looking forward to a sixth season of love, mysteries, tearjerkers and above all action. Who knows, by season seven we’ll get wizards and a school called Hogwarts thrown in for free.
