The review of the following headset feels more like a revisit than an actual new review. The Y-250 models were originally dubbed a great headset, which we called the ‘pilot gear’, as the headset kind of resembles an actual pilot’s headgear. The new Thrustmaster Y-250CPX is pretty much the updated version and has the option to be connected to multiple platforms, instead of just one per model. Let’s see if the original model will become the co-pilot as of now.

Design

Design wise the Y-250CPX has not changed compared to the original model, except for the color on the sides. This newer model has a grey line running across the headband that splits on the sides of the ear cups. The ear cups themselves have a gridded design with leather-ish fabric that encloses your ears.

Overall the design of the Y-250CPX is quite simple but also stylish. The ear cups themselves are a show of having some detailed elements, that never become ‘too much’.

Comfort

As far as comfort goes, the Y-250CPX does not disappoint either. The leather-like ear cups will provide a softer and more comfortable feel, than most other headsets on the market. Also, the fabric will block more environment noise than other headsets, thanks to the materials used. Of course this is a simple matter of personal preference, seeing some users will not like to be blocked off from the outside world.

The headset itself has enough padded areas, to ensure being able to sit through longer gaming sessions. The padding in the ear cups is sufficient and the headband also has a padded area, finished with the same leather-like fabric.

For most people the cups will fully enclose your ears, without squashing them but they tend to be a bit smaller than other models on the market. Some people will have their ears underneath the actual fabric but thanks to the softness, it does not get annoying or painful.

Thrustmaster’s Y-250CPX headset has a tighter grip than most but you’ll be able to adjust the headband, to find the right fit. If you like a headset that is more loose, this one might take some time getting used to.

Specs

  • 5m cable
  • Independent control
  • Detachable and adjustable microphone
  • Compatible with PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, PC and mobile devices/handhelds
  • Performance-enhanced 55mm drivers delivering the right balance between bass, mid and treble frequencies

Overview

Those who have used the original model, will soon notice that this model feels like the multi-platform version. You’ll be able to enjoy using the headset on a variety of consoles, pc and handheld devices in order to be able to use your favorite headset for all your gaming devices.

To use the headset on the PC, it’s a simple matter of plug and play. You will only need to plug in the USB cable and you’re good to go. As for the consoles, a tad more cables will have to be connected. You’ll have to insert an extra component cable in the television, which you will have to connect with the standard jack that is incorporated in the USB-cable. The Xbox 360 will require another extra cable, which will have to be inserted in the controller itself, in order to work properly. Once you get the hang of the overall set-up you’ll be able to get started quite quickly, when switching between devices. It’s good to know that the headset’s cable is 5.20 metres.

The Y-250CPX has a sturdy microphone, that is also connectible with a jack that goes in the bottom of the left ear cup. You can simply remove it, when you’re in the mood for music or when playing games without chatting or voice functions. Even though it is quite bulky and sturdy, you’ll be able to adjust it to your liking.

You’ll see that the headset’s attached cable is quite short and also works with a standard jack. This is the way you’ll be able to connect it with a handheld device but most of the time you’ll have to insert the original cable in the extra cable (USB) in order to access your remote control. The remote control handles a variety of functions, such as bass, volume, microphone activity, voice volume, …

It’s great to have a lot of functions that can be adjusted in mere seconds, in order to find your preferred settings. It should also be mentioned, that not that many brands allow you to properly arrange your bass settings, which Thrustmaster provides to you in such an easy manner. You’ll also notice that the overall bass quality is very nice, for a headset, especially in the mid price class the Y-250CPX finds itself in.

The sound quality proves to be top notch, as well as the microphone quality. You’ll be able to hear your correspondent quite clearly and vice versa.

Overall the size might be a tad bulky for some but the headset itself is not heavy at all and thus it will not become bothersome.

Conclusion

Perhaps it’s time to toss aside that original model and go for an upgrade to please all your gaming needs. Thrustmaster presents you with a good looking, affordable headset that provides the necessary power and comfort to get you through your gaming sessions. It seems we have a new pilot helmet, just don’t go outside yelling at people ‘this is your captain speaking’.
