It’s only been a few days since we featured the fancy-looking Superman version of the Muta Wireless Gaming Controller, and we already have the next Superman-inspired product lined up for you: the GXT 492SM Carus Multiplatform Headset. This time, we’ll be taking a closer look at a budget-friendly multiplatform headset that has a cool design. We were only wondering if the low price of the device would interfere with the overall experience. While our expectations may not have been the highest, we were very pleasantly surprised by the power of the Carus Multiplatform Headset.

Design

The over-ear design of the GXT 492SM looks great. The somewhat bulky exterior looks quite cool with the dark blue hue and the dark red Superman logo on each of the sides. It’s clear that the device is a solid block of plastic, but the designers clearly had comfort in mind with the ample visible padding in the headband and earcups. The red color of the fabric on the inside of the padding also created a nice contrast with the blue plastic exterior of the headset. All in all, there aren’t that many visible whistles and bells. The removable microphone is a plus if you just want to listen to your game’s audio. The microphone mute switch and volume dial are neatly embedded into the exterior of the left earcup.

Comfort

Comfort-wise, the Carus headset did not disappoint. You’ll find ample padding in the headband and both earcups, ensuring you can power through longer gaming sessions. The fabric finish on the padding does heat up a little after prolonged usage, but all in all, it’s a very soft and comfortable experience. We did notice a bit of pinching and pressure on the bottom sides of both ear cups, probably because of the stiffer headband. This improved after a few sessions, as the headset probably shaped itself a bit, or we just got used to the initial pressure. With a weight of 284 g, the Carus never felt too heavy, which was surprising given the device’s overall bulkier experience.

The headset comes with a 1.2 m audio cable and a 1 m extension cable. We found the single cable to be a bit short for gaming on PC, so the extension cable really came in handy. For mobile gaming, however, we appreciated the shorter cable, so it wouldn’t get in the way of things. The same can be said about the detachable microphone, as it was nice that it didn’t get in the way when we were just enjoying some of our favorite tunes. The microphone also has a removable foam cap.

Overview

In terms of special features, the Carus headset is as straightforward as they come. You’ll connect the headset to the device of your choice with the 3.5mm jack, and you’re good to go. You can opt to detach the microphone if you only require audio feedback, and the two main features can be accessed via the left earcup. You can (un)mute the microphone, and you have a volume dial. That’s pretty much it. Truth be told, this is all we require for most games, and we appreciate actually having the functions readily available with the aforementioned switch and dial.

Outside of the basic features, it’s all about the actual sound quality. This is where the Carus managed to surprise us, as many other devices in the same price range often end up sounding a bit cheap, hollow, and just provide low-quality audio feedback. In the case of the Carus, the audio quality was great. We were treated to clear audio feedback from both games and online calls, but we were mostly surprised by the deep bass. We found ourselves also using the headset to listen to music, rather than solely using the device for gaming.

Conclusion

Trust’s GXT 492SM Carus Multiplatform Headset managed to impress us. For a very low price, you’ll be getting a comfortable multiplatform headset with a detachable microphone, easily accessible microphone and volume controls, and great audio feedback. If you’re looking for a new headset and you’re on a budget, we can easily recommend checking out the Carus Multiplatform Headset.
