It’s been a while since Volume 1 of the sixth and final season of Vikings was released. We discussed the physical release back in January 2021, and for many who do not have a Netflix subscription (or something similar), it has been a long wait to finally see the conclusion of Vikings. Now, with Volume 2 physically released, we were able to see the conclusion of the series, and we felt quite nostalgic realizing this journey began way back in 2013. The small hovel of Kattegat had grown to become a proper hub for the Viking world, and these final episodes would tell us if the city would survive the brutalities of the Rus invaders. As we want to keep spoilers to a minimum for this box set, we do advise checking out our review of Season 6, Volume 1 in case you still have to see the entire sixth season.

There is actually not that much we can tell that wouldn’t spoil the finale of this season. These last twenty episodes (Volume 1 & 2) will contain many intertwining storylines. We see Kattegat once again prepare for war, while some of the Vikings are now also looking for a quiet and peaceful life. Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) is one of such people, as she is finally able to do what her late husband wanted to do many years before in England. She is now striving to become a simple farmer, enjoying the last of her days. At the same time, we see the small community of Vikings that has left for the so-called promised land, where their culture would thrive once more.

As a whole, the flow has remained the same throughout the many seasons. Each episode will handle a few items, while constantly building upon the foundation of all events that have transpired before. The story moves at a fairly slow pace, allowing proper character development. The viewer will have more than enough information to comprehend what is going on at all times, but this still remains a heavy show, with many characters fighting their last battle, and others will simply not survive the harsh conditions they find themselves in.

In terms of acting performances, the cast has not undergone significant changes for this last season. The more noticeable new additions to the cast are Danila Kozlovsky and Oran Glynn O’Donnovan, who are both part of the Kievan Rus invaders. Kozlovsky plays the new villain, making Ivar seem like a child who is throwing a tantrum. O’Donnovan’s role is not that complex, but even so, this young man does a superb job playing the sheltered heir to the throne of the Rus Empire. Other than that, we see many familiar faces pass the revue, and we also say goodbye to several before the credits actually start rolling. As a whole, this series has always provided its viewers with great cast members that put down believable performances, and this last season is no exception to this.

Sadly, this Blu-ray box of the final season comes with only a few special features. We have the extra that revolves around Lagertha, which was already present on the Volume 1 box, but we also have a special feature that adds a few commentaries to the mix. The latter is quite interesting, but as a whole, it doesn’t add that much value to warrant buying a physical copy. Don’t get us wrong, we always like special features, but in this scenario, it could have been a lot more.

Conclusion

Vikings: Season 6 (Volume 1 & 2) is a great ending to an amazing series. While some may argue that certain character-specific storylines could have been continued, the overarching plot has been wrapped up neatly. We loved the show, and it truly feels like the end of a Viking era. Those wanting more Vikings content can try out the new ‘Valhalla‘ series on Netflix, but we sadly cannot tell you if it’s any good. Nonetheless, the original show was an amazing experience, and just for the ending alone, it might be fun to just rewatch the series.
