Yet Another Zombie Defense HD – Review
An important aspect of any game, book or movie is its name, do you use a mysterious title to lure the audience in or a clever play on words or maybe even catch them off guard by naming your item the complete opposite? Sometimes it’s better to not look too far and pick something simple so everyone knows what they are getting.
Story
This game has about as much story as a zombie has humanity left in him, so basically nothing. The game does not feature a story or any kind of character development at all. The game has four characters, the guy, the girl, the swat guy and the doc. Visually they are different but underneath they are just people trying to survive the zombie onslaught, one night at a time. Yet another zombie defense HD takes place in a single location, a big rectangle open area with one streetlight in the middle. At least the game is honest about what it is and does not try to distract the player with unnecessary gibberish.
Graphics
The level is small and very basic, it’s a plain with a street texture on it with one streetlight in the very middle. Visually the four characters look different enough, this is very necessary once the chaos kicks in and dozens of zombies flood the level. It’s crucial to be able to access the entire field in the blink of an eye. The models and animations aren’t top notch but the game never zooms in on the player characters. The interface is kept simple with just a small HUD in the top left corner of the screen.
Sound
The game features up tempo electronic music to get your heart rate up. There is no great variety but it does the trick. The sound effects of the zombies, the different weapons and explosions are on point
Gameplay
Yet Another Zombie Defense HD is a zombie survival shooter. The game features third person shooter gameplay with a single camera no matter how many players are on the map. The map is a rectangle with a single streetlight in the middle, zombies can and will come from all sides. The map is rather plain and does not offer any tactical advantage anywhere unless you view a zombie getting stuck in the streetlight as an advantage.
The game offers different modes such as survival where you and up to three other survivors attempt to stay alive as long as possible. During the day you can build walls and turrets with cash you collect from zombies you killed during the previous night. You can restock your ammo or buy a new weapon and defensive structures like barricades. During the night some zombies will drop pick-ups, from health packs, cash to temporary invincibility shields. The pick-ups don’t stay for long so make sure to grab them while you can. Upon finishing a night you also get to improve your character with some basic stat improvements such as reloading speed, movement speed, health points, health regen and pick up range. But in the end death is inevitable but how long can you last and will that put your name on the leaderboard is the question. Another mode is the classic Deathmatch mode with a twist. The general rules of Deathmatch apply, however the map is crowded with zombies. Someone is going to kill you but will he be human or zombie?
The game features a wide array of weapons. To start with you receive a simple pistol with some ammo. If the Walking Dead taught us anything it’s that you can never have enough guns. Even during the first night you’ll be wishing you had a better weapon. However you’ll most likely be investing in some barricades early on in your adventure. They’ll slow the zombies down and give you more control over the fight. Since the waves of zombies keep coming relentlessly night after night it won’t be long before you’ll switch the handgun for something with more firepower like a shotgun and later on a flamethrower, rocket launcher and tesla gun.
Conclusion
Yet Another Zombie Defense HD is a small but decent game that can keep you entertained for a good while, definitely when played co-op with some friends. The game does not lie about what it is and it doesn’t have to. It’s a decent game in its own right.
