Back in August 2019, we had our first encounter with young Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. We get to see how he was raised in a fairly traditional family, with a very religious mother, a hardworking father, and two rather annoying siblings, one being his twin sister. The series proved to be somewhat entertaining but we expect it will not reach the same popular status TBBT has gotten over the years. We were curious to see the evolution that would occur in the second season, or if it would still be pretty much the same as the previous season. We hoped there would be a bit more ‘progress’ to this season than its previous one.

We once again dive deeper in the early years of Sheldon’s (Iain Armitage) existence. The young boy has already shown that his intelligence is on par with the best scientists in the country, who have studied their respective fields for many years. This season once again doesn’t really offer a bigger picture, and in the first episode, we see Sheldon take on his first job, to earn back some money for the damage he has done to the family’s fridge. Many of the following episodes also revolve around certain experiences or ‘first-times’.

Just like the previous season, the series trots along happily over the course of the 22 episodes. There is not much actual progress to the series, and it always feels like random events from Sheldon’s children years. Sure, you see some events unfold in terms of his future college education and so on, but other than that, you could watch all episodes in random order and still be able to grasp whatever is going on. We could even mingle in episodes of the first season, and still have that feeling. Every episode is pretty much a separate case, a small event in his life, and that had a certain impact or lesson to be learned. This is one of those series that is more of a background show, where you could actually perform simple tasks, miss a lot of scenes, and still fully understand what is happening.

In terms of cast, nothing has really changed. There are no significant changes in the background characters as well, and we still see the same supporting cast members. Sometimes a celebrity gets hauled in front of the camera, but that’s basically it. The current cast does a good job, and while in a way Iain Armitage does put down a proper performance as Sheldon, he does after a while gets on your nerves for being too artificial. We know this is Sheldon’s persona, but even so, it feels too manufactured at times.

Last month we noticed it as well that the special features on the Warner Bros releases during this corona period have grown very slim. This is very much the case with the DVD release of Young Sheldon: Season 2, as there are none to be found. While there isn’t that much to delve deeper into, ‘something’ would have been nice, be it a gag reel, a few commentaries, or a making-of portion. We hope we’ll find something of extras again when the third season hits the shelves.

Conclusion

Young Sheldon: Season 2 is still pretty much along the same lines as the first season. You’ll get short episodes filled with a certain type of humor you will either appreciate and find cute-ish or just find annoying and bland. There is often no middle ground with the jokes used, and you basically wade through this series as if it’s some kind of background noise. We are not saying that this is a bad series, it’s just not a good series either. If you liked the first season, you will certainly enjoy this one. If you were already a bit bored at the end of season 1, then this one will offer more of the same, which you probably don’t find worth it.
