The internet is an important part of people’s life and especially social media. There are quite some people out there that want to take a bit of fame and YouTube is one of the possible channels. This takes a lot of time, but if you want to get a glimpse of this lifestyle, you can always get Youtubers Life. The question is if this game is actually worth something itself or not.

Youtubers Life

Story

Youtubers Life shows you the hardships and dedication someone must have while balancing several aspects of life. Of course, don’t expect it to be accurate, as you’re just switching between work, sleep, study and eating in the beginning. At the start of the game, the narrator (the future you) thinks back on the start of his or her career. During the game, sometimes you’re interrupted by a bit more story-telling mostly bringing new content for you to explore.

As this is a simulator, your choices define the rest of the story although the consequences aren’t that impactful. In the end, you might even find it rather boring as it feels like doing several tasks without much effect.

Graphics

If you were hoping to get a really realistic design, less is true. The graphics are simple and dated, nothing more or less. Although it might have its charm, it can get dull rather fast. For example, the surroundings are simple and don’t stand out much, while the characters have their unique style and fit together with the rest of the game but are just really basic. The interface of the computer for example doesn’t really feel user-friendly and is more a chore to visit than a pleasure, while some other parts feel tedious to do. Talking to other people is rather hard as everyone looks practically the same so finding someone specific and striking a conversation isn’t a pleasure either.

Sound

Just as the graphics, the sound isn’t that great. At the beginning of the game, the same tune is looped over and over which is not a bad thing unless you’re listening to the most generic elevator music. The same can be said about the sound effects. There aren’t a lot of them but they don’t really stand out or have much use at times.

Gameplay

Youtubers Life is a simulation game where you have to survive in the harsh world of getting famous on YouTube and the hardships that come with it. At the start of the game, you have to create your character and what goal he/she has to achieve. For example, you can become famous for gaming reviews or maybe cooking is more your forte. There are three options to choose from, but all three of them follow the same path, at least at the start of the game. When you’re set, you are dropped in your old room at your parent’s house. The narrator, your older self, is reminiscing about the past, which you need to fill in of course. Depending on the path you choose, you will do different things. For example, the gamer needs to buy copies and play these while recording but the cooking aspirant just shows off his recipes. At the beginning, this is the only difference between the paths, as you still have to go to school and study or work to get some extra cash. Sleeping and eating is also a necessity of course, so do keep this in mind.

If you’ve chosen your subject of the video and the type (review, unboxing, …), the fun starts. During certain moments while recording, you need to respond on situations. How do you react when you let your knife fall on the ground? There are a few options to choose from, visualized as cards, and each of them has their effect on the end result. You have an amount of Ideas to use during every clip and each card will cost you a few Idea points. If you’ve used all your Idea points, you can’t continue your video anymore. Some of them count as funny, while others are serious. If you use the right type of response, this influences the outcome of the video stats.

Just recording videos isn’t enough of course, as they also need editing. Your computer set-up is not great at the beginning, but at least you’ll be able to do some basic editing. Depending on the ‘cards’ you used during recording, you have to put these in the right order and make the flow match as best as you can. Even more, you’re also able to add effects or other nifty things to make everything a bit more interesting. When you’re happy with the result, you can start publishing and uploading, which might also take a while depending on your computer.

Of course, doing everything manually costs time and this is something you might not have when playing. The game provides the possibility that the editing is done automatically, so you don’t have to worry to get the best video. This makes the flow a bit more fluent, although it does take away a part of the gameplay. After the video is uploaded, the reviews from your viewers come in. At the beginning, there are more negative ones, but you should use these to step up your game. If you’re able to keep up the nice pace and a balance between work and private issues, you’re able to go big and even on television for example.

Youtubers Life

Next to just making videos, you can also complete tasks that give you experience. Leveling up gives you quite some perks, but the biggest one is the new batch of cards you can obtain. Also, there are more Idea points available when you make a new video. Last but not least, you can also get new items in the stores, like upgrades for your computer or new content material. There is more to it than just making videos of course. Sometimes, people will contact you to make certain movies for them, which will also give you some cash. Or, even friends can get in touch to hang out, which can be important for your networking. This is similar to the Sims, although it’s a bit of a gamble too. You can choose the next subject of the conversation out of a few options and if they’re not interested then you lose friendship points.

Although there are quite some fun points, there are some downsides as well. For example, sometimes it starts to feel like a drag because you’re actually doing the same over and over again, while the automatic function doesn’t work all the time. When you’re working on a job for someone else, this doesn’t trigger as finished, thus going past the deadline if you don’t watch out.

Youtubers Life

Conclusion

Youtubers Life takes you on a journey to get to the top and make money by posting videos on the world wide web. The graphics aren’t that great, which can also be said of the music. As you’re playing more of a simulation game, you can shape your own story, although a lot is rather linear too. There are quite some gameplay elements for you to discover, but it sometimes misses the ball.
