In 2018 the second film in the Jurassic World franchise came out, and most viewers were a bit disappointed after the stellar first film in 2015. Nonetheless, fans were eagerly awaiting the last part of the new trilogy. Now, our Blu-ray review copy of Jurassic World Dominion has arrived at our doorstep, and we were eager to see the (extended) finale of Jurassic World. While we did get a few chuckles out of the experience, we were treated to a fairly disappointing finale.

The world has been trying to coexist with dinosaurs for the last four years, as they were released upon humanity in the last film. However, the human race has also found ways to exploit the dinosaurs and sell them on the black market. Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) are now living off the grid, trying to raise Maisie (Isabella Sermon). Maisie is still wanted because she might be a valuable asset for research purposes, as she is a clone after all. The now 14-year-old has reached a rebellious stage in her life, and she does try to sneak out as often as possible. Sadly, during a mishap at the house, she once again tries to sneak off, only for her to be abducted by mercenaries who are working for Biosyn, a conglomerate that has its own dinosaur sanctuary. Owen and Claire will stop at nothing to get her back.

At the same time, Dr. Ellie Satler (Laura Dern) is investigating why Biosyn crops are left untouched by the massive insects that devour other farmers’ crops. She recruits Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) to visit Dr. Ian Malcom (Jeff Goldblum) who is currently working at Biosyn’s headquarters. Thanks to his invitation, they can investigate what is going on.

In terms of flow and pacing, this last installment of the franchise is utterly chaotic. The story jumps from one thing to another, and the movie just relies on the characters’ dumb luck. It feels as if every character is just doing random stuff and they never actually pull something off themselves. All of the characters either get saved by sheer luck, or everything could have run its course for the most part without the involvement of most characters. The movie is filled to the brim with fanservice, however, and there are a few memorable moments that made us chuckle. Other than that, certain events will get wrapped up in a very shallow fashion.

When it comes to the overall acting performances, we see a clear difference between members of the old Jurassic Park movies and those that starred in Jurassic World. The original trio, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill are the true stars of this final movie and they add a layer of quality to the experience. The stars of the Jurassic World franchise are somewhat left to rot in this film, as their characters are extremely one-dimensional in this finale. The movie is basically one collection of shallow characters who all eventually come together to play out a disappointing finale.

In terms of extras, you’re really getting your money’s worth here. On top of the features that tell you more about how the movie was made and how certain scenes came to life, you’ll also be able to view the extended version when picking up a Blu-ray copy of the film. While the additional scenes are nothing that will completely change the overall experience, these added scenes do add context to certain events of the film. Thanks to the latter, the movie becomes a better whole. We quite enjoyed browsing through the additional content.

Conclusion

Jurassic World Dominion is a very unsatisfying and disappointing conclusion to the Jurassic World trilogy. Fans of the original Jurassic Park trilogy will be treated to a lot of fanservice, and this will probably provide you with a few fun moments. Sadly, the story feels chaotic, it’s clear that the two writers of the film barely worked together, and some scenes do not make any sense at all. The characters fall flat, except for the original cast whose characters seemingly did a few things with their lives. If you can suspend your disbelief for several hours, you might find a few scenes worth it here. We are giving the movie a passing grade, simply because the Blu-ray version provides the viewer with fun and interesting extras.
