J.Rom: Force of Gold #3 Verblind – Comic Book Review
With a heavy heart we have to announce that the last volume of the J.Rom: Force of Gold trilogy has hit the shelves. It was clear that in this last issue the gloves would truly come off and that the series would go out with a bang. Let’s dive right back into the action and see if our fallen hero can finally redeem himself and rise back to his former glory.
After the battle with the evil Abaddon, which seemingly ended in a tie, J.Rom and the miscreant both get incarcerated to rot away in the toughest prison ever made. Seeing this prison does not find itself on planet Earth, Force loses contact with J.Rom, leaving them in the dark on what the hero is up to and if he is in a condition to continue his mission. J.Rom however is receiving the royalty treatment in prison, with beatings to make him feel right at home, but even so, he never loses track of wanting to help mankind. He warns the warden that Abaddon still has something up his sleeve and that he should be monitored at all times. The warden does not take J.Rom seriously and just punishes him even more. With a treatment like this, it’s only natural that the safety of the prison will not be guaranteed.
Back on Earth Pi was able to escape the clutches of Abaddon’s compatriot Yulls, an evil genius who specializes in robots. She is determined to stop Yulls’ plans of mass destruction, but it seems she could use an extra hand as well.
This last volume of the trilogy is again action packed and raises even more questions, specifically about J.Rom and his rowdy past. It’s sad to see that many questions remain unanswered, whilst at the same time it makes this number even more exciting, mysterious and above all, a lot more grim. It seems that our superhero isn’t your typical run-of-the-mill hero, who has never done a bad deed in his entire life. It’s the grim past that seems to define J.Rom and that makes him a bit more unique, safe for the tacky golden suit he wears. That being said, you will never encounter a dull moment in this issue.
In our previous review we were wondering if Pi would become a superhero as well. She does contribute towards the righteous cause, but whether it makes her a superhero, we’ll leave that one to you guys.
The style of writing and illustrating remains the same, even in this last issue and thus it falls perfectly in line with the rest of the series. The ‘American comics’ look suits this tale quite well, even though details might be lacking at certain times. The glossy paper that’s used goes hand in hand with the bright colors used for the many explosions and of course the radiant golden appearance of J.Rom.
Conclusion
J.Rom: Force of Gold #3 Verblind is a very explosive end to a way too short spin-off series of one of the most beloved comic book characters in Belgium. Nonetheless, this homage showed us the matured version of the beloved strongman and his life as a superhero. Whilst some fans of the original series might find it a bit over the top, it’s still easy to say that this series is totally worth it. Action, betrayal and a declined superhero getting his act together make for one hell of a story.
