De Rode Ridder #253 Het Eindeloze Eiland – Comic Book Review
Last time Johan found himself stranded with Allis on a bizarre island in the midst of the ‘Hellmouth’, a dangerous place sane travelers usually avoid. Nonetheless, Johan’s determination, and perhaps desperation caused him to throw caution to the wind, and now they have to fend for themselves on an island that has certain hostile figures lurking in the dark. Things aren’t looking out for them, as Malfrat was also right on their tails in the last issue. Will the island become a deathtrap, or a paradise in disguise?
Again it’s quite hard to dive into the specifics of the story, as this album is, and feels like, one big combat scene. Johan and Allis are still stranded on the island, and are now looking for a way off this damned paradise. Sadly, with a new boat on the shore, it’s clear that someone else, probably Malfrat, has finally caught up on them. From here on out, it’s a struggle for survival. All of this transpires under the watchful eye of Merlin, who has been watching Johan’s quest from afar.
While the story is still going strong, albeit at an intense pace within the limits of these slim albums, it’s becoming clear that Marc Legendre can’t let the reigns slip too much, as the series is currently undergoing one problem, namely that the issues are too thin. That being said, this story arc remains very interesting, but perhaps they should split up certain story portions, or simply think about lengthening the following issues.
Fabio Bono can’t let his creativity run too freely this time, as he is bound to the island, and thus there isn’t that much chance for diversity. Nonetheless, the artist once again shows he is well versed in drawing both tranquil scenes, gorgeous ladies and of course, the intensity of combat.
Conclusion
De Rode Ridder #253 Het Eindeloze Eiland is certainly a great continuation of the first few revamped albums, but we can’t help but feel that these issues are too short for the modern, reworked Johan. Nonetheless, this issue is action from cover to cover, and it will certainly please those who love to see Johan in a scenario where he shines the most, namely combat.
