Aurion, legacy of the Kori-Odan, a just recently greenlighted, this game finds its origin from a small African studio called Kiro’o Games Studio based in Yaounde Cameroon. The game tells the tale of Enzo Kori-Odan, a prince who lost his throne to his brother in-law and who tries in his exile to find support and retrieve his honor.

Imagine if someone close to you took everything and exiled you, and if that isn’t enough it happens on the day of your coronation and marriage. That is the start of the tale, the rest is for you to decide and play through. You can roam around the world searching for possible allies who will support you and your wife in order to reclaim the throne, challenging every foe who stands between you and your destiny using a full arsenal of moves and magical abilities.img_013

This action-RPG game is a single player campaign type of game played with the horizontal scrolling. It gives off an old arcade feel with more modern graphics to it, there is a constant search for information and just like in every RPG-game, interaction with people is the key to your survival. The combat system seems to be impressive, with good combos and positioning you need to defeat every enemy in sight to advance through the rounds of the battle or levels of the game. There seem to be multiple ways to defeat your opponents and you will also have to develop your characters. The further you progress through the game the stronger you are able to get. The game is only for pc but can be played with an xbox controller and that does seem a lot easier when wandering around or fighting and just makes for a much smoother gameplay.

The combat system itself seems to run quite smoothly and every fight feels differently due to the choices you have to make regarding your fighting style. This exact mechanic offers a grand replayability wich is something essential when creating a single-player only game. The fights are lively and the colors are bright and vibrant. A negative aspect about the fights is that they can get repetetive and even boring after all the button pushing and the waves of enemies. It seems that there is no voice acting so every interaction in the game is with text, so that is a part of the game open for interpretation but can be quite the annoyance when playing for a long time. When talking about the rest of the sounds there are no remarks, everything seems properly synchronized and the music takes the game to a higher level. On some aspects, the game reminds of a final fantasy 7 with an old school arcade fighter game mixed in, the graphics are newer and that all together makes it a pretty good combo.img_014

Quite the accomplishment for the designers is the least we cansay about the game and it is a first of its kind. The studio is known for the usage of African tales, myths and stories, they did not just create a game but rather a genre on its own with Aurion. The game entered development in 2013 at that point is was already a 10 year project. Not only creating a game but also sending a message against the cultural clashes. The intentions are quite noble but they have still a long way to go if they want to make this game successful.

Conclusion

This game is full of unheard aspects, the first African story told by a game, the first African game designer and the unique  and unseen concept. The story is brought rather well and although there is no voice acting, there are not a lot of bad aspects to this game. Furthermore we can all be curious about the finished product and what other stories they have in the closet there in Cameroon.

  1. […] A while back we already had the chance to take a look at Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan and we were quite pleased with the early build of the game. This rather folkloric title by the African studio Kiro’o Games was a first for this continent of the world, and perhaps in many ways it has put the company, as well as its region on the game developing map.
