Blizzard Entertainment’s Next Chapter: What We Know About the New Survival Game

The year has started frantically at Activision Blizzard studios. After being part of the largest transaction in video game history, the studio is ready to release a new, groundbreaking game. The new adventure is yet unnamed, but the studio and its fans won’t stop talking about it. Come with us and look at what the studio that gave us franchises like Diablo, Warcraft, and Overwatch, is brewing right now.

Announcing the Unannounced

Last January, Blizzard Entertainment posted a screenshot of the new survival game on its Twitter account. In the same post, the company invites players to “write the next chapter”. It’s been five years since the studio released its last “new universe” with Overwatch. The studio has announced the new game will be available for console and PC. Yet, after Microsoft’s acquisition, PlayStation players don’t have many reasons to be optimistic about it.

The good news is that there are plenty of other new releases to anticipate in the meantime. In March 2022 only, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok, FAR: Changing Tides and Gran Turismo 7 are set for a release, among others.

We also see the same trend replicating in the online casino industry with some of the top online casinos in the USA even dedicating a page to highlight their newest games. BetMGM, for example, has over 50 new games to offer, including Cougar Cash, Viking Pays, and Fortune Rush.

This project has been brewing for about four years, and it’s the first survival game of the company. Activision Blizzard has a proud tradition of creating new and exciting worlds. Diablo, Starcraft, and Doom are only a few of them. So, when it says it’s about to release an entirely new universe, fans have all the good reasons to be eager about it.

The strategy to build up expectations around its new project includes releasing elusive screenshots of the game. So far, two of them came out. One sees a woman wearing light armor with feathers and a helmet like a giant bird head. She’s in a green forest, following glowing footprints to what seems to be a mirror or a portal. The other screenshots show two modern-day kids going astray from the city into a portal to a magical world.

Rumor has it; it’ll be a first-person game. The word came from Camille Sanford, Concept & 3D Character Art Producer of the project. She announced on Twitter that her team was hiring artists for a new “first-person survival game.” Even so, a third-person version isn’t off the table. The game Ark: Survival Evolved is a great example of a game with both first and third-person versions.

The merger of Activision and Blizzard in 2008 was already an encounter of giants. Activision has been around since the early consoles from the 80s. Meanwhile, Blizzard has countless blockbusters in its portfolio. Yet, after being acquired by Microsoft for USD 68.7 billion, the company became part of the third-largest company in the industry.

However, Activision Blizzard is going through a difficult moment with employees striking against the studio’s high management. So, inviting and retaining new talent has been a considerable challenge for the company. In 2020, the company was at odds again with its employees over wage disparages.

Only The Strongest Survive

We don’t know much about this “unannounced survival game” yet; only that secrets and anticipation are fundamental ingredients of its marketing campaign. The company is living an incredibly tumultuous moment, with strikes, lawsuits, and massive mergers.

Yet, fans couldn’t be more enthused about its release, while teasers leave a lot of room for imagination. If the new title manages to live up to the company’s past successes, fans can expect an epic adventure.
