Deathtrap confirmed as a tower defense game

Two weeks ago we got teased with a very special episode of Deathtrap, the newest game by NeoCore Games. In the Monster Training Academy – Episode 1, we could see how an adorable character tries to succeed training, watching out for deadly traps – ultimately failing hard. As we were able to play the alpha of Deathtrap at Gamescom, we have some extra information to share with you!

Deathtrap is, as first thought, a tower defense game filled with action RPG elements that also include a top-down view of your character. The settings of Deathtrap are quite familiar as the game is set in the same universe as the Van Helsing games from NeoCore – thus somewhere around the 19th century. The variation of traps are almost endless as there are twenty-five different trap designs and each of these traps can be upgraded at least three times. The majority of these traps will look familiar and once again it should as the traps have been somewhat loosely based on those that we can find in the Van Helsing series. While Deathtrap does have graphical features that are similar to those of Van Helsing, the game is not part of the Van Helsing series. The gameplay not only reminded me of the Van Helsing games but also of the gameplay that we can find in Diablo III and the tower defense games Orc Must Die! 2 and Sanctum with features that are clearly a huge part of the tower defensive genre.

Furthermore, there are two playable classes – at least for now. The Sorceress is a female character while the brutal Mercenary on the other hand is a male character. Deathtrap will feature an extensive level-up system for the character. The bar for the level cap has been raised quite high immediately as the level cap is 100 from the start. The endless variation of traps and the leveling systems of the character combined yield about fifty or more hours of gameplay.

Deathtrap will be released in a few months, more specifically in October 2014 for a generous price of 19.99 USD or 19.99 Euros.
