DPC 2023: Invictus Gaming has a new roster!

Apparently, the Chinese Invictus Gaming team has a new squad for the next Dota Pro Circuit China tour. Both the announcement on the team’s Twitter account and the registration page with the team rosters on the Dota 2 official website can confirm that. Let us see what we know about those changes!

New player, old history: Pyw is the new support for the team

Known in the eSports world as Pyw, Xiong Jiahan (熊家晗) is a well-experienced player, active since 2016. His playing role is a support, and his signature heroes are Rubick, Phoenix, and Mirana.

Xiong Jiahan started in the professional Dota 2 eSports with the team HTML Gaming. Then Pyw had been playing for various not-so-famous teams, such as Longwan, BraveHeart.Zombie, Rampage Gaming, Young Elite Gaming, and Yuki – not sticking for too long with any of them. In 2017, he got into Team Serenity: the team had not the best results in International 2018: 9th–12th place, but did win in the World Showdown of Esports #1. In 2019, Xiong Jiahan transferred to Vici Gaming and before the transfer to Xtreme Gaming really shined there:

  • Second place in MDL Chengdu Major
  • Victory in ONE Esports Dota 2 World Pro Invitational Singapore
  • Third place in DreamLeague Season 13
  • Silver in China Dota2 Professional League Season 1
  • Won in the OGA Dota PIT Season 3: China
  • The International 2021 brought the team 5th–6th place: not the best result, but a good one nonetheless, with a price of $1,400,600.

By the way, in the International 2021 Vici Gaming won against Invictus Gaming — it really feels ironic as it turns out, right?

But let us get back to Pyw’s achievements. In 2021, he reached 10,000 MMR which is a matchmaking rating. It is directly proportional to the player’s skills and thus reflects them — and we surely can say that Xiong Jiahan is hella good!

Invictus Gaming: brief overview

Invictus Gaming was founded in 2011 in China. Besides Dota 2, it has squads concentrated on StarCraft 2, League of Legends, Hearthstone, Overwatch, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The Dota 2 team is a stable leader in the regional eSports scene, but globally the victory in the International 2012 remains to be their biggest achievement.

After the roster changes, the active team roster looks like this:

  • Zhou Yi aka Emo
  • Zhou Shiyuan aka Dust
  • Li Longwu aka 项羽
  • Xiong Jiahan aka Pyw
  • Cui Chenyang aka qyqx

The most perceptive readers and active followers of the team may have noticed additional changes. Yes, Li “Irving” Jian has left the team and Wilson Koh Chin Wei aka poloson is now loaned to Myth Avenue Gaming. Also, Invictus Gaming loaned a player from PSG.LGD: an offlaner Li 项羽 Longwu.

Why is DPCCN important for the team?

So, why would the team undergo roster changes in the new professional season? The answer is simple – to become stronger and have better chances. Invictus Gaming did not qualify for the TI in 2022, taking 4th place in the China Qualifier, and in the TI 2021, they took 4th place as well. Again, great result, the even greater prize of $2,401,100, but who would not want to do better?

And the importance of DPC lies not only in the prize pool and team ranking — it also gives the winning teams points for participation in the International and a chance to establish global superiority and win a huge sum of money. Entry into the main Dota 2 tournament is guaranteed for those teams who scored the most qualifying points.

Before March 5th, the situation was not looking good for Invictus Gaming. In the DPC CN 2023 Tour 1: Division I, they have lost seven matches out of five, yielding to EHOME, Knights, PSG.LGD, Aster, and Xtreme Gaming.
