Rage games have been popular for quite some time now, often being a prime choice for streamers to entertain their audience with. There have been many different types of games in the genre, ranging from classic 2D experiences to more complex 3D games. Good Luck falls into the latter category and will also be the topic of today’s review. In Good Luck, you’ll be playing as an employee who’s late for a business meeting, trying to make his way through a hostile town. While entertaining, the game lacked content.

Story

The game doesn’t really have a story, except for what the store page tells us. Basically, you’re late for a meeting, and you’ll have to rush through the city. For some reason, however, the city is clearly out to get you, as explosive dumpsters, banana peels, loose-hanging advertising signs, and so on, are making it nearly impossible to get to where you’re supposed to go. We didn’t mind the absence of a story here, as it wouldn’t have added much value.

Graphics

Graphically, Good Luck is pleasant to look at, but it’s also a very simplistic-looking game. The game only utilizes a handful of assets and a few backdrops, which suffice for this specific type of game. There aren’t any character customization features, the game only consists of a few streets you can walk through, and there simply isn’t that much to tell when it comes to the visual presentation. Once again, for what the game is aiming for, what’s present is more than enough.

Sound

In terms of sound design, you’ll be treated to stock sounds for screams and the game-over screen, and a looping upbeat tune that keeps you company as you die over and over again. Once again, simplicity seems to be key here, which is understandable. Perhaps a few more tracks would have been nice here, but we can imagine a lot of people just playing their own music when trying to beat Good Luck.

Gameplay

Good Luck is a rage platformer, which means that it’ll be a tough-to-beat game with many obstacles standing between you and the finish line. In short, you’ll have to be wary of pretty much everything on the map, as lightposts may fall on you, vents may explode, decorations may fall down, and so on. The concept is really simple, and you’ll be able to play through this short experience alone or with up to five people in total. While we weren’t sold on the multiplayer mode, Good Luck did do what it said on the tin: it was annoying, funny, and hard to beat. The mechanics are also deliberately kept really simple, as you’ll only be able to walk, sprint, and jump. The offset is clear, the execution is decent, but we did notice a few hitbox issues here and there.

Truth be told, there isn’t much to tell here. You walk around, die a lot of times due to the many obstacles, retry, and hopefully eventually beat the game. There simply isn’t that much to the game, and that is perfectly fine. We do find that there are some missed opportunities, such as the lack of a checkpoint mode, which would allow you to try and tackle certain obstacles. The developers could have opted to make it so that you couldn’t earn any achievements in this mode, making it clear it’s a practice-only mode. The same can be said about the multiplayer mode, as every player gets punished when a single player dies. When someone meets their untimely demise, every player has to start over again. It would have been nice to perhaps implement a mode where the person who traversed the biggest difference would win the round. As it stands now, you could be doing amazing, only for it to be ruined by another player. While the latter can be hilarious at times, it also grows old really quickly.

Conclusion

Good Luck is a fairly entertaining rage platformer, albeit a short one if you’re a genre veteran. The game does have the right atmosphere, is silly enough to make you laugh, and has enough obstacles to make it hard enough to beat. That being said, we were missing a few better thought-out multiplayer modes, checkpoints for practicing purposes, and just more content overall. The game is affordable for the experience it offers, but there are other, more meatier options out there. Even so, Good Luck will provide you with a reasonable challenge and a few good laughs.
