After trying out the semi-idle clicker game, All Hail the Orb, recently, we assumed it would be the last entry we’d see in the genre for a while on PC. While these games are often very popular on mobile platforms, PC and consoles tend to lag behind when it comes to any memorable entries in this specific genre. This brings us to Greedy Greedy Gnomes, which is developed by Nautlander and published by Future Friends Games. With an interesting theme and fun visuals, we were intrigued. While we enjoyed the experience, it did suffer from some of the same issues as All Hail the Orb.

Story

You’ll travel down to the remote island town of Eldor’Idle, as you’ve heard you can make it big over there. Riches are plentiful, but you’ll have to put in some work. You’ll have to earn money first to buy access to places that will allow you to earn even more money. The different characters you meet do have a few lines that could be considered to be part of a bigger story, but all in all, Greedy Greedy Gnomes’ narrative remains in the background for the most part. It’s all about collecting money here, be it by clicking to collect it yourself or by idly seeing the cash flow in.

Graphics

We liked the pixelated style of Greedy Greedy Gnomes a lot. While the game is very limited in scope, the different houses, special buildings, and the overworld all had cute details to create some variety. We loved to take in the sights when unlocking new buildings in the game. That being said, you’ll have seen everything the game has to offer very quickly. Unexpectedly, thanks to the design choices, the game does not suffer from frame drops, not even when things get a bit more hectic.

Sound

The sound design isn’t too bad as a whole. The sound effects are satisfying for when you keep collecting more and more gold, but we eventually turned them off when we were idling and working on other things. The same can be said for the music. It’s okay, and it’s enjoyable to a certain extent. After a while, however, we also muted the music to focus on other things or to play our favorite tunes in the background.

Gameplay

Greedy Greedy Gnomes is a semi-idle clicker game in which there are some active components, especially at the start of the game, that gradually evolve into automated processes. You’ll start by clicking pots in houses or mining ore manually. The offset here is straightforward: you’ll have to amass more and more gold to achieve your goal of being extremely rich, not having to worry about anything anymore. We were immediately hooked thanks to the presentation, and the gameplay drew us further in.

As you progress, you’ll be able to buy more and more keys to unlock new houses and special buildings. When doing so, you’ll reach new options to gain even more money or to upgrade a lot of passive bonuses. Eventually you’ll be able to employ the titular gnomes, who will break pots and vases in the different houses for you, raking in the gold. You’ll have to keep an eye on them though, as these greedy little creatures tend to steal a lot of coins themselves or fall asleep on the job. By regularly having to check their work, Greedy Greedy Gnomes ensures that there are some active components to the gameplay.

Just like All Hail the Orb, Greedy Greedy Gnomes suffers from limited playtime. If you set everything up and then let the game idle, you’ll complete a first run in a matter of hours. Of course, you can drag things out by hunting all achievements or by completing certain challenges and goals, but there is sadly just not that much content to go around. You’ll keep the relics you have unlocked when starting a subsequent run, but there is simply not that much to return to after beating the game once. We would love to see games like this with a lot more content, as we’d be returning to play (and grind) daily if the gameplay is as enjoyable as it is here.

Conclusion

Greedy Greedy Gnomes may be short, but it is an enjoyable semi-idle clicker title with a fun theme. The game managed to entertain us for an evening or two, while we alternated between actively playing the game and letting it run on our second screen. We loved the visuals, and even though we eventually turned the music off while idling, we didn’t mind the soundtrack either. Even so, if you’re looking for a lengthy clicker game, you won’t find it here. If you’re looking for a palate cleanser in-between bigger titles, this one is worth checking out.
