Hot Pursuit (DVD) – Movie Review
Every year loads and loads of cheap comedy flicks get released, many of them not even reaching the theatres overseas, nonetheless, some of these either show how great actors and actresses have stooped down into making an occasional movie in order to score some money. When hearing about Hot Pursuit, this idea immediately sprung to mind but it seems the acting performances are actually what caused this movie to stay afloat. Reese Witherspoon as a tight small cop and Sofia Vergara as the hot witness, both running from danger, well perhaps this was the main reason to pursue this movie.
Cooper (Reese Witherspoon) always looked up to her father, a great policeman who died in the line of duty. Ever since she was a child she went along with her father on his many patrols, learning the business from one of the respected policemen in her area. Nonetheless, when she started out as an officer herself, things went from promising to bad after she set a young college student on fire, due to a confusing expression the latter used. Her blunders also damaged her career and thus she ended up storing evidence, which made sure she would not come into contact with the general public anymore. Luckily for her, things started to look better once again, as she was to help a fellow officer, Jackson (Richard T. Jones), escort two key witnesses in a case against drug-lord Vincente Cortez (Joaquin Cosio). Jackson had to keep tabs on the husband, while Cooper was needed to look after Daniella Riva (Sofia Vergara). Even though everything sounded rather simple, it was immediately clear that miss Riva wasn’t the easiest person to deal with and she had a rather nasty attitude.
When Cooper and Jackson are about to head off to bring the witnesses to their destination, suddenly masked men appear out of nowhere, taking Jackson and Riva’s husband under fire. If all the commotion wasn’t bad enough already, two other suspicious figures raid the house, also shooting everything in sight. In all of this chaos Jackson and Felipe Riva (Vincent Laresca) both loose their lives, leaving Daniella and Cooper to fend for themselves. Even though they manage to escape Riva’s estate, it seems this unlikely duo only has each other in order to survive.
Seeing this movie is a comedy that is about getting two people from point A to point B, it’s clear that the pace is rather fast and this is probably also the reason the movie only lasts around an hour and twenty minutes. With conflict situations between the two main characters being the key feature of the movie, it’s a given that these happen in succession of each other, with almost no other scenes in the movie.
Even though there are a sufficient amount of decent side characters present in the movie, this movie is in fact pretty much a duet between Witherspoon and Vergara. Both actresses might also be the only two people that make this movie worth it, to a certain extent. With their different personalities and overall behavior, things turn interesting, even with the typical ‘unlikely duo’ formula in place. Although these talented actresses will not make you laugh out loud at any given time during the movie, they are able to make a grin appear in the limited time span of the movie.
This DVD release only comes with one three minute long extra, showing the chemistry of both actresses on screen. This flimsy extra feature is enjoyable to watch, but it’s a sorry excuse for a special feature. Then again, the movie itself does not have that much interesting content to make many extras.
Conclusion
Hot Pursuit is one of those comedy movies that doesn’t really bring that much extra value to the movie industry but it can entertain you on a quiet evening when nothing is on TV. That being said, both leading actresses put down a funny and witty performance, given what script and means that had to work with. Okay to watch once, after that the pursuit is neither hot nor interesting anymore.
