Peacemaker: Season 1 (Blu-ray) – Series Review
With the Snyderverse basically in shambles, it’s sometimes still surprising when new series or movies are released that are still tied into said DCU. Recently we saw the release of The Flash, and we are currently still awaiting the release of Aquaman 2. While The Flash is underperforming around the world, many fans still have high hopes for Aquaman 2, which seems to be stuck in post-production hell. Now, however, we’ll be taking a closer look at the first season of Peacemaker, which revolves around the unlikeable ‘superhero’ we saw in 2021’s The Suicide Squad.
Peacemaker revolves around the titular Peacemaker (John Cena), who got yet another lease on life, as he apparently survived the mortal wounds he sustained in The Suicide Squad. After being released from the hospital, he assumes he is a free man, and he tries to dive back into his role as Peacemaker. Sadly, he is immediately picked up again by one of Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) teams, namely the one that also worked on Task Force X. Peacemaker is recruited to help with Project Butterfly, and he must take out several high-profile targets. He doesn’t mesh well with the team, but it’s clear he’ll have to follow the rules if he ever wants to be free again. The story handles different topics, such as loss, loneliness, and over-the-top superhero antics.
In all honesty, we weren’t wowed by the initial half hour of the show, as we felt that the series was trying to mimic Deadpool, but as we continued watching, the show did stabilize a bit. The humor got to a point where things were genuinely funny, and the overall pacing and flow were also quite good. Even though some characters felt a bit all over the place at times, we did very much enjoy the character evolution throughout these eight episodes of the first season. The action is on point, and the series does not shy away from showing quite a bit of gore. If you’re a fan of series like The Boys, you’ll probably also enjoy the atmosphere of this one when it comes to the overall grittiness of the fighting scenes.
Acting performances are of top-notch quality in Peacemaker, and the quirky characters are properly brought to life by their respective actor. Surprisingly enough, John Cena shows that he has a fairly wide range when it comes to his acting capabilities, even after a slightly more ‘wooden’ first episode. The cast does have a lot of experienced cast members, such as Robert Patrick, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, and Freddie Stroma. Some other familiar faces will also be seen throughout the course of the eight episodes, which is always a nice touch for fans of other DC productions. The character development is also rather interesting to see, even though a few characters remain fairly one-dimensional.
The Blu-ray version of Peacemaker comes with loads of bonus content. On each disc, you’ll find special features, all revolving around the characters, the effects used in the series, thoughts and insider information of the cast, and other behind-the-scenes footage. There’s a lot of additional content to plow through, and this does add a lot of value to buying a physical copy. Some separate clips could have perhaps been compressed in a meatier single clip, but that’s just us nitpicking.
Conclusion
In all honesty, we didn’t have extremely high expectations when it came to Peacemaker, as the market for superhero shows and movies is extremely over-saturated, but we ended up really liking this series. The show has all the right elements that have been missing from a lot of recent productions, such as great acting, an interesting story, character evolution, and just generally good action sequences. If you’re looking for something that has the same vibe as The Suicide Squad, we can recommend checking this one out.
