Last year, Blizzard Entertainment launched World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, the ninth expansion of the hugely popular multiplayer online role-playing game.

In Dragonflight players enter a new world of adventure and are given the chance to relive or explore the Dragon Isles, a continent filled with primordial wonder and discover long-forgotten secrets.

In this guide, journey back through the story so far and explore everything from the lore to characters to uncovered new areas.

  • Legacy of Dragonflight

Many thousands of years ago, Azeroth was home to the ancestors of dragons – primitive beasts that were ruled by primal instincts. However, amongst them there were five where the spark of intelligence was lit and whom thought/felt more deeply than others.

When Galakrond rose up, these five banded together to defeat him and for their bravery they were granted gifts from the Titans and transformed into the Aspects, leaders of the dragonflights, and protectors of Azeroth.

After their ascension, the Aspects created a new world, The Dragon Isles, a beautiful place and a beacon of hope for all the world. But when the dragons were called upon during the Legion’s attack on Azeroth and the world was broken apart in the Great Sundering, their lands were sealed away by the Titans draining the magic away and leaving the land dormant.

But a surge of power has reawakened the magic beneath The Dragon Isles, the heart of the dragon’s kingdom and ancestral home of the Dragons of Azeroth. As the Dragon Isles awaken, a new continent steeped in history is ready to explore but so too are old feuds and long-dormant threats. Surging with elemental magic and the life energies of Azeroth, the Dragon Aspects return to the isles, to reclaim their place as the guardians of Azeroth.

  • Origins of the Dracthyr

As we uncover the mysteries of this new realm, the story of the Dracthyr emerges. This ancient race of humanoid dragonkin are creations of Neltharion, Deathwing and new additions to the franchise. They are a race of fierce warriors who channel the magic of the dragonflights, maneuvering across battlefields as they heal their allies or damage their foes.

Bound to Neltharion’s will by an ancient Titan artifact, they were soldiers and fought against Raszageth the Storm Eater, one of the leaders of the Primalist rebellion. But during the battle the Titan artifact was destroyed and the magic which unified the Dracthyr was dispelled. When Neltharion could no longer control the Dracthyr, he imprisoned them and froze them in time.

Now as an ancient enemy returns, the Dracthyr have been reawakened and their story unfolds.

  • 10.1 Embers of Neltharion

In 10.1 as the Primal Incarnates seek an edge in their campaign against the Dragon Aspects, the path to Neltharion’s secret laboratory is revealed deep beneath the Dragon Isles,. The Primal Incarnates bore massive tunnels down into the earth to uncover the cavern, in a quest to uncover Neltharion’s secrets.

Within this newly revealed area, we dive deep beneath the surface to Zaralek Cavern, to a place with a deadly secret –  Neltharion’s long lost laboratory, Aberrus Approach. As you travel down to explore this new zone, it is split into various biomes with different creatures.

Within this place we will learn more about Neltharion and his origins but also what was planned with the creation of the Dracthyr. As you venture further we find out more about the Dracthyr’s story, which is still unravelling as they woke up from a stasis that they had been in for thousands of years.
