Supergirl: Season 4 (Blu-ray) – Series Review
DC’s quartet of series that got known by airing them on Netflix has been dipping in quality since several years ago. The series have become stale, the storylines too convoluted, the topics too repetitive and too politically correct. Nonetheless, they have been airing regularly and are still going strong in terms of its loyal fan base. The respective series never dipped too much, making them impossible to watch, but it seems like they are spreading the content too thin to capture the hearts of many viewers that were present on day one. We recently received a Blu-ray copy of the fourth season of Supergirl, which once again tries to get all political on us.
Supergirl: Season 4’s story can be summarized in a few lines of text. We are seeing many alien immigrants settling down on Earth, but this also comes at a price. Because of new technology, many hardworking people are losing their jobs. This results in hate against the aliens, rather than finding solutions to adapt and work together with their new neighbors. This could have been a great chance at showing the world how it’s done, but sadly, it all turns very politically from the get-go. We see how the world is riling up against the aliens, and eventually how these new inhabitants of Earth are the victim of violence and suppression. Overall this is an important topic, but it’s handled in a wrong way, making the series lose its entertainment factor, turning it in a political show, which will work for a certain audience, but will cause a different audience to lose their attention or to find the people writing the scenarios a bit ‘too high and mighty’.
We are somewhat disappointed with the flow of the series, once again due to having a season with too many episodes to properly convey the red thread of the season. Episode one of this season starts off with a bang and drives you to the edge of your seat, to become dull the coming episodes, to get blasted with filler content and to lose all its progress whatsoever until many episodes have passed. The biggest issue with the dip in quality of, for example, Supergirl is the fact that the evolution of a season is completely wrong. You either start off slow, to gradually build suspense, or you start off with a bang and never release said pressure. In this scenario, the series starts with fireworks, only to wave a sparkler in your face for the coming 23 episodes. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow took the lead by shortening its last season to 16 episodes, which, even with the lower score on the site, helped the flow of the series a lot.
Acting performances remain somewhat the same as the previous seasons. Some regulars get even more screen time as they are important for the overarching plot, but other than that, we don’t see too many changes. We see Nicole Maines, a huge transgender rights advocate, make her appearance on the show, which we applaud. That being said, it would have been a lot nicer to have her tread in the spotlight in a normal fashion, and not once again to ‘teach the world a lesson to be better’. Once again, we believe there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of equal rights for everyone, but forcefully adding ‘valuable lessons’ to something that is entertaining for a huge number of people might have a reverse effect.
The special features on the Blu-ray edition are somewhat a copy-pasted version of other DC series. You’ll have the snippet about the villains, which we also recently saw on the Gotham: Season 5 box, and there’s the part about the Elseworlds crossover, which was already present on the last Flash release. Nonetheless, there are also deleted scenes, bloopers and a Comic-Con panel to be found. This Blu-ray edition still offers a fun amount of extras.
Conclusion
Despite our introduction being quite negative, Supergirl never gets too dull or tedious to watch. It’s clear that this series intended to draw in a bigger female crowd, but fans of The Flash, Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will certainly enjoy this series as well. We hope the future season will be cut in half, to prevent loads of filler content, and that the story value rises once again, instead of cramming the PC way of life through our throats.
