Tales of Berseria Remastered – Review
Back in 2017, we reviewed Tales of Berseria for PS4, a game that came out on PS3 and PS4 in Japan a year earlier. We concluded that this new entry in the Tales series was probably one of the best ones at that time, and we spent hours upon hours clearing the game. Now, slightly under a decade later, the title makes a return as a remastered version. While PC gamers already had upscaled visuals and higher FPS, the Remastered version comes with a few quality-of-life improvements as well. As nothing truly changed for the base experience, we suggest reading our in-depth 2017 review by clicking here. This article will focus mainly on the relevance of this remaster and the actual updates.
As this is a remaster and not a remake, there aren’t that many huge changes when it comes to the overall experience. In essence, Tales of Berseria Remastered is the same game as the 2017 original. If you played through the game when it originally came out, you know what an amazing game in the Tales series this is. If you haven’t, then we can already tell you right off the bat, this is a great JRPG, and is pretty much a must-play title if you’re looking into the Tales series as a whole. That being said, no real changes have been made except for some quality-of-life upgrades. The general walking and running speed has been sped up by 20%, which still isn’t that much, but it does make exploring a lot more pleasant. The biggest issue with the original was that exploring could become a bit tedious due to the overall slow-moving speed. On top of that, you can turn encounters off, making it even more pleasant to explore certain zones without having to constantly grind.
Outside of upscaled visuals and higher FPS, there isn’t that much that has changed here either. We were a bit disappointed to also learn that PS4 players are not able to upgrade their original copy. Tales of Berseria Remastered is a standalone game, and this also means that you cannot transfer your PS4 save file either. We feel like these are missed opportunities to win back some older players to play through the game again.
Conclusion
If we look solely at the game itself, Tales of Berseria Remastered is an absolutely amazing game, even nearly a decade after its initial release. The Remastered version is definitely the way to go if you haven’t experienced the game yet and if you’re looking for a great JRPG. You truly cannot go wrong with this one. If you already own the game, however, the quality of life improvements may not be enough to warrant double-dipping, as there is no upgrade pack available, and you can’t even transfer your original save file. We found this to be a missed opportunity, as we can imagine a lot of players of the original are on the fence, whether or not they should pick this one up. Even so, in a vacuum, this is still an amazing title worthy of your attention.
