Superhero movies (for the most part) are pretty solid. If nothing else, they’re fun and entertaining, even if the plots can be a little scarce. However, when you see the same characters over and over, the films can start feeling repetitive and boring. And, for some reason, studios insist on bringing back familiar characters even though the public doesn’t seems to be too interested in them. Superman and Spider-Man are great, but we don’t have to keep seeing them in lame movies.

Marvel

While an endless amount of Avengers films are on the horizon, Hollywood does seem willing to branch out a little with superheroes a lot of people may not be familiar with—like Ant-Man, for example. But perhaps it’s time to go even further and start introducing heroes to the big screen who offer a different meaning to the word “super.”

If you have played any of the Half-Life games—and hopefully you have!—then you are certainly familiar with the main character, Gordon Freeman. Even though he is just a video game avatar, he actually has a very rich back story. At an early age, Freeman became very interested in quantum mechanics. After witnessing some experiments involving teleportation, he became obsessed with the transmission of matter. He even has a PhD in Theoretical Physics from MIT. At Black Mesa Research Facility, Freeman worked on secret nuclear and subatomic projects in the Anomalous Materials department.

In the first Half-Life, Freeman and his team accidentally create an inter-dimensional rift in the space-time continuum, which causes aliens to invade the Black Mesa facility. Using his wits, Freeman is able to survive and is tasked with ridding the world of these damn, dirty aliens.

The exposition aside, Freeman is very fun to play as in the Half-Life games. Nowadays, there are quite a few games featuring traditional superheroes, but Half-Life and its follow-up are just as good as any of them. No matter who you like or where you decide to play, you can find a game featuring him or her. If you’re an online gamer, for example, you can play games starring the likes of Iron Man and the Hulk, two of the biggest superheroes around. That being said, you can also find characters like Blade, Ghost Rider, and even Elektra in online games, which really just makes being a Marvel fan that much sweeter. And if you’re a mobile gamer, you have just as many options, too, with a slew of options available for your handheld device. These include titles highlighting specific heroes like Spider-Man to those boasting nearly every character in the Marvel universe.

What Makes Gordon Freeman a Superhero?

gordon

Though he has no “super” powers to speak of, Gordon Freeman could still be considered a superhero. He has two similar comparisons, the first being Batman. Bruce Wayne has no special powers, but he is able to use his intelligence to create an assortment of weapons to fight the bad guys. Freeman may lack Batman’s fighting ability, but he definitely makes up for it in smarts. The second superhero that resembles Freeman is Iron Man. While also very smart, Tony Stark relies heavily on his Iron Man suit. And guess what? Freeman has his own super suit, which allows him to leap great distances, sprint, and better use his weapons. Although Freeman doesn’t have the wit or snark of a Wayne or Stark (he never says a word, in fact), he has still become a legend.

Listen up, Hollywood: Stop giving us the same old superheroes again and again. It’s time for some new blood. We want a movie (or movies) starring the guy Empire named as the number-one video game character of all time.
