What are Minecraft Survival Servers

It was nearly eight years ago now that I first played Minecraft. I was on Skype with my gaming group, complaining that I had nothing to play. One of my friends suggested I give Minecraft a go. All I had heard about it up until that point was that Pewdiepie and the Yogscast got big because of it. Other than that I thought it was just a block-building game for children.

But now Minecraft is one of my top five most-played games. I have sunk countless hours into it. Started hundreds of new worlds and had some of the best times of my life playing it with my friends. No matter how long I go between my Minecraft sessions, I am always happy to return to it.

The great thing about it is that new players are still coming to the game every year. And there is so much content in Minecraft now that it can be quite difficult to find a good way to play for a beginner. Which is why I’ve put together this guide explaining what Minecraft survival servers are, and why you should try them out.

Survival Mode

Survival mode isn’t a multiplayer-only mode. You can do survival mode in single player. Survival is one of the two primary modes for Minecraft, with the other being creative.

In survival mode you start with nothing. You need to mine materials and build shelter to survive. You also need to eat food and keep your health bar up otherwise your character will die. Unlike in creative mode where you are invincible.

Survival mode is definitely challenging, yet incredibly rewarding. There is no greater feeling than putting the finishing touches on a castle you have spent hours harvesting the materials to make.

Survival Multiplayer

So now that you know what survival mode is, you can most likely work out what a survival server is. It is a multiplayer server that is on survival mode. It is essentially the same experience but with other people. And, for me at least, Minecraft is always more fun with other players.

Some of the best survival servers you can find for Minecraft actively encourage players to work together on massive projects such as giant castles or even recreating fictional worlds. A few years back a group of dedicated players recreated Minas Tirith from Lord of the Rings.

A lot of survival servers will be using various mods to enhance the gameplay experience. Some of these might include new blocks or mobs, while others might add whole new areas to the game, like the Aether mod. Browsing through modded survival servers is a great way to find new mods that you might want to add to your own worlds.

Learning The Ropes

The main reason I tell newer players to find a good survival server is that it is the best way to learn all the intricate ins and outs of Minecraft. Sure, the wiki is useful. But without knowing exactly what you’re looking for, it’s hard to navigate.

The Minecraft community is a very friendly and accepting one. Nearly all players are willing to help newcomers. You’ll learn a lot of the more intricate techniques for things like building and farming. There are a lot of hidden details in Minecraft that make the game far easier once learned. So don’t be afraid to ask for help when starting out. And you’ll most likely make some fantastic friends along the way. At their heart survival servers are a social place. I’ve met so many amazing people on Minecraft that I still game with to this day.
