Charlotte, known as the Queen City, is a sprawling, charming area of the South. It’s the second-largest banking hub in the U.S. behind New York City, has diverse neighborhoods and suburban areas, and is relatively affordable.

Carowinds is a 407-acre amusement park that actually has a portion that sits in neighboring South Carolina.

It has been in operation since 1973, and includes a water park, children’s area, and 13 world-class roller coasters. The latest attraction is the Copperhead Strike, the first double-launch coaster in the Carolinas, with five inversions.

The White Water Center is a recreation ground with whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking, rappelling, and rock climbing.

They have rope courses, ice skating, and yoga classes, and host many live events and music and film series.

The River Jam takes place Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from May through September and features roots rock, Americana, bluegrass, folk, and funk bands in the one-of-a-kind outdoor venue in the middle of the world’s largest man-made whitewater river.

More than 30 races and competitions take place throughout the year across a variety of sports and disciplines, like cycling events and trail runs.

Discovery Place is a hot spot for those with kids. This interactive science museum has four distinct museum experiences with interactive educational programming and community outreach initiatives.

It offers summer camps, hosts birthday parties, and is home to a huge IMAX Dome Theater.

The Levine Museum of the New South connects the Civil War past of the region to the future to realize the promises of a new south.
