FORGED IN FAITH: THE CREATION OF DIABLO IV’S PALADIN

A Legend Returns

The Game Awards marked the reveal and arrival of the Paladin to Diablo IV, a class beloved by Diablo fans for more than 25 years. Players can experience the new class in Season 11 now by pre-ordering Diablo IV’s newly announced expansion, Lord of Hatred.

The Paladin embodies faith, resilience, and balance, offering players a customisable experience that blends legacy with innovation. Dominic Sileo, Senior Combat Designer, reveals the behind-the-scenes workings of the Paladin’s highly coveted return.

Q: Given the long history and fan base of Diablo, can you elaborate on the decision to bring back the Paladin class, and what kind of expectations the development team had going into its reintroduction?”

Sileo: “So I remember running off the school bus in high school to play Diablo II, and the Paladin was the first character I ever tried. Players have been asking for this class to return; it is something that the dev team and I have wanted as well.”

“We spent time understanding what the common and famous builds were that had been played over the past two decades plus. So things like Auras and Blessed Hammer, but also Crusader abilities such as Blessed Shield and Condemn, made their way back onto the Paladin. Those things we knew we had to have because they were so famous in the different types of builds. Although I don’t think it would have been enough to just rehash everything from what we know and love, we had to make the Paladin something completely unexpected. We really wanted to honour those expectations and hope that we’ve met and even exceeded them.”

Q: For those new to the Paladin class, what sets them apart from the classes in Diablo IV?

Sileo: “The Paladin is our knight, our holy warrior, it’s our sword and board class that is empowered by their faith. Their armour, sword and shield, but also that their faith is their weapon; the light really empowers them. The light is kind of a central piece of their power that brings these two parts of the class together to create this unstoppable hero.”

Q: “What are the core components or ‘pillars’ that you focused on to make the Paladin class feel truly authentic to Diablo IV?”

Sileo: “When we designed the Paladin for Diablo IV, we focused on three core components to ensure an authentic experience. First, the Indomitable Guardian: envisioning them as an unshakeable, faith-protected knight dedicated to safeguarding the innocent. Second, The Divine Armoury: integrating iconic gear like swords, shields, and holy hammers, but with a unique twist where the Paladin empowers them with the power of the light. And finally, the class is a Holy Conduit: positioning them as a living bridge to the source of divine energy, channelling power directly from the light to smite foes and protect allies. We believe these pillars truly capture the essence of the Paladin.”

Q: How do these core design pillars for the Paladin class guide the development process across different teams, such as art, sound, and animation, to ensure a cohesive and high-quality experience?”

Sileo: “Our pillars act as a vital baseline, ensuring the entire team is aligned and speaking the same creative language and jamming with each other – it’s almost like a symphony or harmony of all of the different ideas that we have. This shared interpretation allows every department to say, for example, ‘when we think about holy light or holy damage or holy power, a lot of times you think of these big, glowing, golden, flashing lights, could this be a spectrum of colours?’ The sound folks made every Paladin hit weighty and impactful, and the animation team conveyed the powerful combat momentum. There are a million other examples. Ultimately, these pillars drive us to create the best possible class experience.”

Q: You mentioned some returning skills. What can players expect when they dive into the Paladin class for the first time?

Sileo: “From the outset, we focused on the concept of ‘oaths’ for the Paladin. These oaths define distinct playstyles, rewarding players for upholding their chosen code of chivalry and faith. This system was crucial for both enhancing the Paladin’s fantasy and driving deep gameplay theorycrafting. For the new class, we designed four distinct ‘Paladin Oaths’, each offering a unique playstyle.”

“The Juggernaut Oath transforms defence into offence, focusing on shield-based combat and tankiness with skills like Shield Bash and the Fortress ultimate.”

“The Zealot Oath delivers frenzied, faith-driven melee, centred on sword mastery reminiscent of Diablo II’s Zeal, culminating in the devastating Zenith ultimate.”

“The Judicator Oath embodies heavenly wrath, unleashing classic holy magic and conjurations like Blessed Shield, Blessed Hammer, and Heaven’s Fury.”

“Finally, the Disciple’s Oath features an angelic Arbiter transformation, granting flight and conjured weapons, such as the Spear of the Heavens, for bombarding foes.”

Q: Any final words?

Sileo: “The Paladin is more than a class. It is a legend reborn, a symbol of faith and resilience, and a defining addition to Diablo IV. Players will step into the role of Sanctuary’s shield and Heaven’s sword, experiencing a class that blends nostalgia with innovation and stands as a cornerstone of the game’s themes of light, shadow and moral choice. We hope you love playing the new class as much as we loved bringing it back.”
