Only recently we took a closer look at a USB stick and a Micro-SD card, and it seems we are coming full circle with our following short review where we take a closer look at Toshiba’s Canvio Basics (2TB) external hard drive. With our ever-increasing need for more storage space on our PCs, consoles, and other devices, it’s always nice when you can find a reliable (portable) hard drive. In this regard, Toshiba delivers just what the doctor ordered.

In terms of design, you’ll be treated to a simple black device that is easy to carry. The dimensions are 20.5mm x 70mm x 119mm. This means that the hard drive will never be in the way, and with its featherlight weight, it’s easy to take with you if you need it on the go. There are no real bells and whistles in terms of design, except for a modest indentation in the form of the Toshiba brand name and a small LED light.

Out of the 2TB advertised storage space, you’ll be able to use 1.81TB, which is still more than enough to store your favorite games, pictures, music, and other important files. The hard drive only needs to be plugged into a USB port, and you won’t need an additional power source. This is literally the perfect example of a plug-and-play device.

When using benchmark tools such as CrystalDiskMark, it’s easy to see that the performance of Toshiba’s tiny drive is great. You’ll get reading speeds that are approximately around 138 MB/s while writing speeds reach 154 MB/s. This means you can easily transfer your data to the drive, while not having to wait for longer periods of time. As we are still a gaming site, we installed a few Steam titles on the drive, and these booted without any issues at all. This makes the drive a great option if you want to install a few bulkier games when running low on disk space on your actual gaming rig.

Conclusion

Toshiba’s Canvio Basics is a great storage solution that provides quick transfer speeds and portability. The drive is not only great for storing your valuable files, but it also serves as a great option to install your favorite games. For a fair price, you’re getting a great pocket-sized external hard drive without the need for an additional power supply.
