Gears of War 5 Versus Tech Test – Preview
Gears of War 5 was announced at the E3 this year and it will release in September this year. This weekend was the second weekend of three Gears of War 5 Versus Tech Test weekends. In one of these weekends, people who pre-ordered the newest installment of this game’s series and, of course, we as game reviewers, could check out the current state of the game. This Tech Test allows us to go through the Boot Camp that will learn you the basics of the game and a preview of some of the multiplayer modes that will be available in the full game.
When you start the game, you have to run through the whole Boot Camp first. Immediately, we notice that there haven’t been made any changes to the controls and game mechanics, so this game will offer the same controls experience you are used to. These controls were already great, so in our opinion, a change was unnecessary. Taking cover is still one of the most important tactics you need to use to master the game, even in multiplayer. It will definitely grant you some extra kills each time when done well.
After the completion of the Boot Camp, you’ll get access to the multiplayer modes that are available in this Tech Test. The modes available are Arcade quickplay, King of the Hill and Escalation. King of the hill is a capture the flag type of game in which you need to capture and hold objective rings to gain points and win. Escalation is a Domination mode with new weapons that will be placed at team spawn areas each round. In the Escalation mode, respawns are limited so teamwork is essential to win each round. The Arcade mode is a typical Gears of War twist on the hero shooter with unique abilities for each character. You can choose which character you want to play and you can change your loadout before you dive into the battle. Each game mode will put a team of five players at the side of the COG against a team of five players of the enemy faction, the Swarm in a battle for victory. This results in us thinking that the Swarm will be the main enemy in this game.
The gameplay in this Tech Test of Gears of War 5 is typical to the series. Fans of the franchise will love how the controls stayed the same with some minor improvements with abilities and such. In graphics, there’s not much to say other than that it looks fine for a preview of a full game, but the best experience is probably for the PC version, where you can edit your settings. Unfortunately, in this Tech Test, no new weapons have been introduced yet, but they may surprise us in the full game. The music used in the game sounds very familiar and typical to the Gears of War games. This Tech Test only lets players experience the PvP part of the game, so we didn’t get a chance to get a glimpse of anything other than some PvP modes. We look forward to the release of the game to see its full potential in action with hopefully another great story in the campaign mode.
