LEGO Pokémon Eevee – Review
Even though we recently reviewed two cool LEGO Advent calendars from the LEGO Harry Potter and LEGO Star Wars universes, it had actually been a while since we last had our hands on a bigger LEGO set. What would be a better time to dive back into it with the release of the LEGO Pokémon sets? For today’s review, we’ll be taking a look at the LEGO Pokémon Eevee set, which, as the name implies, lets us build Eevee. With older sets being licensed to the now somewhat obscure Mega Bloks, we were curious to see how the official LEGO ones would turn out.
With the popularity of the LEGO Super Mario sets, which got further expanded upon with Luigi’s Mansion sets and even Donkey Kong sets, it was only a matter of time before Pokémon would make an appearance too. It took a bit longer than expected, however, as we first received LEGO Mario Kart and LEGO Animal Crossing to scratch that Nintendo itch. Outside of Eevee, LEGO and Pokémon enthusiasts can find sets for Pikachu, as well as the evolved Kanto starters in one big set: Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard. The Eevee set is the smallest of the three mentioned here, with 587 pieces, divided over six bags.
In terms of building time, it took us roughly an hour and twenty minutes to build the set, which is a reasonable amount of time for a set such as this. The build itself never got too complex, and the creators spruced up the design by adding a few brighter colored bricks for the inner workings. Even the posable parts were also fairly ‘easy’ to build, making this a set that’s great for younger and more experienced builders alike. That being said, the overall design was very nice, and the construction of the different parts was also a lot of fun. The bags all logically handle different seperate parts, leaving you satisfied with your progress even if you only do one bag per building session.
For a licensed set, the LEGO Pokémon Eevee set is actually very affordable. One could argue that for the amount of bricks in the set, a small price reduction of around €10 would be in order, but all things considered, the price point feels very reasonable. You’ll get a decently sized set, and the overall build quality is very nice. We would have perhaps loved something like a trainer-like minifigure in each of the released Pokémon sets, but that’s just us wanting a small bonus item in the box. Even so, the small custom pieces with the eyes, nose, and mouth printed on are already a nice bonus, as we are simply not a fan of stickers to get the same result.
Conclusion
The LEGO Pokémon Eevee set is a fun-sized LEGO set that respects the source material. We had a blast building this cute Eevee, and it made us even more curious about the other, larger LEGO Pokémon sets. For a fair price, you’ll be getting a reasonably sized licensed set, which is a surprise, considering a lot of the LEGO Nintendo sets come at a higher price. If you like LEGO and you’re a fan of Pokémon, this one is an ideal present for yourself.
